    Default Fresh baked sourdough bread

    About three weeks about I decided to try my hand at making sourdough bread. I started developing my own starter culture of yeast about two weeks ago. Then last week I baked my first loaf of sourdough. Unfortunately my first attempt was a dismal failure. It didn't rise, didn't look like bread and tasted so bad it ended up in the bin.

    But every failure is a learning experience and today I had another go. Today I made two loaves of sourdough bread. They are not perfect but heaps better than my failed attempt last week. The joy of eating your own bread is similar to the first time you successfully shave your whole face with a straight razor.

    So from now on fresh baked sourdough bread will become a ritual in our house.

    Yeah, it's very different with a living culture that may change over time. My body hates wheat but it's an intriguing aspect to baking.

    Yeast is out there all over the place. if you leave some water and flour out by an open window there is a good chance you'll pick up some wild yeast. It may take a few tries but it's a good experiment.

    There are two reason why there are no pictures. I have my camera packed away in a box after the move and secondly the bread tasted so good it is almost all gone now.

    i know what you mean. I bake sourdough every weekend to supply bread for my family for the week. I love baking anyway, but it feels good to make something my family enjoys and knowing exactly what they're eating. I sometimes also grind my own flour for fresh whole wheat bread. It goes straight from grain to flour to dough in less than an hour's time.

    My old Mother baked a lot of sourdough, we did find it got more sour over time, but dam I love her sourdough cookies !! I seem to remember sourdough was a popular topic of conversation on the Klondike during the winters. I suspect there are a lot of tricks to managing it properly. May be you have to make up a new starter every few weeks?
