    Default Eccentric Flyfishing

In the recent flyfishing thread I got to wondering who here is a little more eccentric than "normal" flyfishers?
Most go through a progression where they end up tying flies and even building up a few graphite rods.
I have found myself turning rod blanks from wood, furling leaders, attempting to make reels and even tying flies streamside in my hands using found materials.
I have recently been researching line making, more on reel building and even thinking of building a silk line braider.
    Is anyone else this insane?

I'm not that insane, but it is mostly because I have too many hobbies that suck up my monies.
But I do usually keep my little 3/4wt wt 6ft TFO rod in my car. It can be used both spinning and fly so it is always there in case I can get away.

However, my father is addicted to fishing for striper from his kayak.
The basement at his house holds his fishing kayak and various things he's made for it.
My old bedroom has been converted in to a tying and rod storage room. There is just enough room to walk from the door to the tying desk. When we visit we have to move things to fit a pack & play for the youngest.
He also has a lap desk and one of his many home made drying doohickies next to his easy chair in the living room.
He has another dryer in the kitchen. He's also rigged one up on a suction cup and with a 12v power supply in case he needs to repair or ty any new flies while out fishing.

I suppose some of my flyfishing activities are slightly eccentric. One of my current favorites is night fishing with streamers for King Salmon. Catching aggressive 20+lb fish in the dark as they move up the river is really exciting. Plus....no crowds

I'll add another eccentricity: I will grab a rod, pack and disappear for about a week at a time just fishing all day...well, before we had a daughter. Man I miss that.
I have also fished with my daughter strapped to my pack. She's starting to get too big for that.

Not me but I could easily do it if it weren't for the whole lack of money thing. I have a tying kit that I take with the material for half a dozen classic flies and a very cheap clamp vice, in case I need something I didn't bring in my fly box or the ones i have get eaten by that darn treefish. I have build a few graphite rods but never even considered making a reel or line myself. I am thinking of making furled leaders though. Also one of the rods I made was a 5' 4wt for my grand-daughter (painted pink of course). And I am planning a spring pack trip with a couple guys I work with. And after trying with limited success I have decided to buy any fly I might need smaller than an 18 my fingers are just not that nimble anymore not to mention my vision.
Give a man a fish and he eats for a day teach a man to fish and he will be frustrated for life.

    Epic LOL

In Spain is said: "when a person catches a fish...becomes fisherman"

Thanks for bringing to mind a wonderful memory for me.

I carried my daughter now 23 about 1 1/2 miles into a "good" fishin hole. My wife about 8 months pregnant with my son now 21 carried my rod!

No fish, but more proof that my wife is a keeper!

P.S. I have been known to use a worm once in a while.
