I just bought a mutewatch - not entirely sure what that says about me to be honest. But at the moment the novelty hasn't worn off and I am wandering around swiping the damn thing obsessively, setting vibrating timers and alarms, and accosting random strangers on trains with my little gadget.

My only grumble with it is the band - why so short, and why the press stud? Surely a more conventional clasp/buckle arrangement would have been better.
James.

My latest arrival, Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 16. I have always loved the Tag designs and now they have brought their movements back in house I don't think this will be my last Tag, infact the limited edition 300 SLR is a beauty!

I had been looking for some time to purchase a thin simple elegant dress watch when these two Longines came up for sale. My wife and I now have matching dress watches, but do not wear them very often. They are about 15 years old. The watchmaker said he did not think they had ever been worn.

No long screws, see attached photos taken with my new USB microscope. I knew I HAD to have one!
The band attachment is actually very strong as it is attached to the back of the watch. Very smooth.

Thanks for the pictures. More proof that a picture is worth more than a thousand words!
In my particular case. I only use automatic. Why? Simple basically no maintenance and accuracy.
3's are my watches.
1) Omega speed masters automatic.
2) Maurice Lacroix's
3) Tag Calibre 36
But the one's I love I really don't have the money for it is the ZENITH EL PRIMERO. That's a machine.
Thanks
Kenneth
The El P was the finest chrono Mvmt ever made,Was a reason Rolex stopped using the venerable Valjoux 72s,sadley, they are no more:(

I've had a lot of Swiss made watches but this Japanese made watch is my favorite and gets the most inquiries and compliments
Took the Submariner for a wild swim in a rare sunny day ;)

Love the old Seiko Automatic Diver! I have one that I bought back in 1987 when I was in the Army. I wore it through Sapper and Ranger school, and many, many parachute jumps (~80 total). It still looks great and runs like a top today, and it's never been serviced!

It seems odd but true less expensive watches take abuse better than expensive ones (in general). Less expensive watches have looser tolerances so they can take the abuse and continue to run long after they should need maintenance. In return for that cheaper watches aren't as accurate because of the tolerances. Really high end mvmts basically run on a film of oil and when that oil starts to deteriorate or a trace of dirt gets in, the watch will stop or run erratically. With Seiko the 7s mvmts which are in most of the basic divers typically runs around 20+ seconds a day. You can fiddle with it and get it to run better however over time it will revert to the norm which is what it's designed to perform at.
Rolex does not use the El Primero any more either. I agree that that is an incredible movment.
I'm partial to the Tissot, since I've owned one for approx. 7yrs now and it's never lost a beat.

As my current work watch is on its last legs I decided to get something new, as I work in a manual environment and have metal allergies, I bought a new nylon and Velcro strap for practicality, but then I had the quandry of a mechanism for it, as I work with locomotives currently I bought a Thomas the tank engine watch, I will marry the two into a practi-fun hybrid.
I am also looking at vintage watches too.
Think what you like, it is already making me smile.:-D
One of my all time favorites. This watch is a one off prototype made for the Canadian Govt. during the development of the SARS watch.
Is a Rhonda Quartz movt with date, tritium tubes,5mm mineral chrystal and screw down Crown.A great timekeeper.

Well probably better quality, materials, accuracy, life expectancy, workmanship. Mines got better cheapness, comedy value,ok to get broken at workness.
Don't be shy pixel, if we were playing watch top trumps, you would win in 5 categories, and I would I ly winin 3, if my categories even existed.
However would be lothe to use your watch at work which is the whole reason for my new watch, so on that score I guess you are right.
I prefer Baume & Mercier, Concord and Universal Geneve, all Swiss solid 18k watches. American I prefer solid 14k Hamilton or Waltham. I used to buy fairly costly plated watches, but on average the plating wears off after a few years, leaving the watch looking like crap. Better to spend more on solid gold and have it last a lifetime (some of my watches are 75+ years old) than plated crap. I prefer mechanical watches, but they are hard to find if buying a "modern" watch.
I didn't think the brands you mentioned ever sold plated watches. Back in the day quality watches were gold filled and if taken care of these cases last a very long time. Most modern watch are stainless anyway.
Gold is nice however you pay a frightful premium for it. With swiss watches if you weigh the gold you are paying almost 10x what it is worth. The other issue with gold is it scratches way too easily. For a daily wearer it's impractical.
Part of the beauty in a solid gold watch is that scratches can be buffed out and made to look like new again. I have a number of them and rotate them like my razors. All but one of my gold watches were purchased at estate sales or auctions, typically for about twenty cents on the dollar. One of the last Concords I bought cost me a little more than $800.00-solid 18k, diamonds where numerals would be and diamond pave in the center. The watch retailed for over $4000.00, so I got a heck of a deal.I sold gold watches and custom made jewelry for a number of years back in the early 1980's so I am very familiar with many karat gold watch brands. It used to piss me off to spend 350-500+ for a plated watch only to have it worn down to the base metal after a few years. So, for me, stainless or solid gold is the only way to go.
I wear a Luminox every day Titanium with tritium markers. One tough watch that has lasted about 20 or so years. Had one stolen and had a time finding a replacement to then found two other styles and keep them for just dress. Yes I am stuck in a rut. This is not the everyday one but they are similar

Talk about plate, a few years ago I almost bought a gold plated pocketwatch it was a JLC from the late 1800s and the thing weighed a ton. I thought odd the base metal was so heavy but in fact the case was not base metal it was solid platinum. back in those days platinum had no real value so they gold plated over it.
Well here's my 9 year old H3 Traser watch just back from the Traser watch shop after 9 years of loyal service in which time she as seen off the challenges from the great pretenders Seiko and Citizen which in my opinion as a Carpenter and I've owned both those watches in everyday use working on various sites and giving them a fair amount of abuse this watch is the daddy of them all, so out of respect for the watch I sent her back for a total refit, which included a full service including changing the "O"rings battery new carbon fibre bezel new sapphire crystal glass, new rubber strap including pins, well she now looks like new again and she deserves it, looking forward to another 9 years of perfect service.

Jamie,
It is great to see such a fantastic refurbishment on your much loved H3 Traser.
Thanks for sharing. I have just had my Grandfathers Gold pocket watch repaired at great expense as it needed a new main spring. Sentimental value again... Pics in a few days.
Couldn't you almost buy a new one for the price of a service like that? I used to have one of those when they first came out and back then they were like $150 for the all plastic body.
The watch will cost you around $450, and the price of the full services including the new parts came to around $150, so rather than buy a new one I went down this road. Traser H3 watches — Official UK Sales and Service Centre - P6506 Commander

My dailey Knock around.type 1 sandy 490,17J manual wind, gotta love those tritium tubes and markers:)

In reality it is a quartz movement,so there is no servicing to be done.Nice refurb on a nice watch tho.
This is the best watch i have ever had. That is not saying much though! It is fast approaching 11 months old wich is the longest I have had a wrist watch last. I got a warranty on that one and it lasted about 10 months then the company was out of business! LOL It is a house brand that is made by another. I got it "supposedly" for half price. Attachment 134881
It is made by the company here.A9318W/B-BLK
It has a ronda 715 movement like the H3. I have beat the heck out of it and scratched it Etc. Not the crystal.
I like the band and am worrying about replacing it in the future. It is starting to show wear and get sloppy. Of course the warranty doesn't include the band. Any thoughts about a good replacement band? I would rather be proactive!:D
