I have looked at the Lamy's but they don't fit my hand or my pocket well. Of course that is just me.

I just ordered a Monteverde Impressa for everyday driving if you will excuse the expression.

It was a toss up between it and the Lamy Safari AL Star.
Yeah, I posted about it back here: http://straightrazorpalace.com/finer...ml#post1197112

Just for the hell of it I ordered a cheap Chinese "Jinhao" FP a few weeks ago (Ebay# 390802033545) and it's really bloody good! It's up there with my Waterman in terms of smoothness.

But you see the problem with FPs for me is that looking for one always leads me to looking at more. So having decided to get an everyday pen, I've bought the Jinhao (which is great) another Chinese one (Picasso I think - tends to dry up quickly but writes fine once it's going), I have a noodler on its way, and I'm still thinking about the Lamy. And to top it off, I hadn't heard about the Monteverde before, so thanks a bunch for introducing that Pat! Someone please make it stop...

The Lamy Safari is also very smooth; surprisingly so given the cheapness. I also got it as an 'everday' pen. Trust me, I HAVE actually considered taking a dip pen to work along with a nice brass ink stand but I believe I'm 'considered odd' as it is, I don't wish to add fuel to the fire...

Why don't they fit your hand? Are they too big or too small? I quite like their chunkiness, and I wear mine in my trouser's pocket rather than a shirt pocket; in fact I abhor shirt pockets in general;and moreso when they contain pens. I have seen people wear pens in their shirt where the buttons are; but that's beyond non-conformist; that's just stupid. Gay people (and lesbians) often wear them around their necks on brightly coloured beady things, at least the ones I've observed; though I agree this may be too small a sample group to make a REAL determination about the propensity of these 'genres' of people to carry out these actions (the wearing of pens on brightly coloured beady things) at a rate greater than people not of this 'genre'. I guess you'd need to do a study. Maybe you could sort of herd a whole bunch of different genre people into a room and throw in pens, shirts with pockets, trousers (skirts, dresses, kilts, loin cloths (speaking of loin cloths did you see that Ghandi's went for like 18 mil or something)) and see what they grabbed and where they put them. It's just an idea, take it or leave it, I don't care..

I don't care for the shape of the grip and the clip doesn't work for me. I wear a pocket protector in my shirt pocket.

Well that's why you use pocket protectors Carl!

I've been using fountain pens since I got my first one as a present in 1982. I still use that pen (a Sheaffer) when I give lectures and I'm happy to say there's a small but dedicated little group of math-geek graduates who now think the only way to do math is with a fountain pen

I picked up a Lamy a few years back and put an italic nib on it which makes it fun to use. A good every day pen.

I cannot remember all the different ones I have, but the ones I like using the most are the Sheaffer, the Lamy, and when I am in meetings with people who are impressed with ostentatious display, my Mont Blanc (I usually take that one along to meetings with Vice Chancellors etc.). As soon as certain people see that star in the cap they think I am rich and conservative, which puts me at the advantage straight away.

Open your mind a little Carl. Very convenient they are. I thought like you at one time but once I tried them I was hooked. I actually defeat their purpose right away and cut the corners off the bottom to let water drain if I get sprayed.
