Thanked: 1185The Coolest Discovery Ever!
So, this probably won't apply to about 90% of you since most of you are pretty up to date, Techy types, with your fancy Droids, iTouches, Kindles and the like but I just found something that 's cooler than skeeter's tweeter.
You can actually download Kindle software onto your PC from Amazon.com and download free Kindle books to your PC. They have about 48000 titles for free or you can buy Kindle books and download them to your PC. The free secition is a mixed bag. Yeah there's some trash but there's also a bunch of cool classics as well. I just downloaded 25 books or so and am reading "The Red Badge of Courage" . Low tech, low budget and really cool, just my speed! The older I get, the better I was

I can't think of the other sites right off hand but there are some web sites dedicated to releasing out of copyright ebooks for downloading, these are all free since they are out of copyright, alot of the old classics are out there for the picking. I do need a new kindle I find it painful to try and read entire books on a computer screen.

Thanked: 275Try here:
Project Gutenberg - free ebooks
A handy piece of software:
calibre - About
Calibre is very handy for translating e-books from one format to another.
And one more:
ePub DRM Removal, Remove DRM from ePUB as easy as ABC
which removes the DRM (digital rights management) from various e-book formats.
Combining those two programs lets you take e-books out of your local library, and read them on your Kindle, even if the e-book is in EPUB format, rather than MOBI.
I don't know whether the ABC software is legal under the "Digital Millenium Copyright Act" -- but I don't know if the DMCA is legal, either.

A huge +1 for Project Gutenberg.
