The 45 acp is a much lower velocity than the 44 magnum, so you have virtually the same size projectile, at much different speeds.
You can shoot a 44 mag 100 yards. You can't do that with a .45 acp.
With newer guns and smokeless powder you can get a 45 long colt up there, but at the time the 44 mag was developed, I don't think it could.
Oh, and case length doesn't really mean anything.
.357 mag is the same diameter as a .38 special. There is enough room in a .38 case for a magnum load. For safety, the .357 case is 1/8 longer to prevent it being chambered in a 38 pistol, which isn't built for that much pressure.
A nominal 9mm is only about .002" smaller than a .357/.38 and it is ballistically similar to the .38 despite a much shorter case.
Absolutely, is not the .45 the Holy Grail of calibers.
I'm actually partial to .40 S&W myself... I know, I know... muzzle flip, yadda, yadda.
Really, though, my Springfield XD subcompact doesn't have too much flip. I'm actually waiting for them to finally release the XDs in .40 so I don't have to change calibers.
OT: Speaking of muzzle flip (and perceived recoil in general) I've been reading Alan Eguza's (sp?) book on the turnipseed technique (as in Ken Turnipseed), and there's some pretty interesting theory in there.
BUT and this is actually a small but hehehe
The rifle and cartridge that sling a .223 bullet vary greatly, also the bullet and composition of that bullet can change it from an Explosive impact to a Penetrator that barely displaces any tissue at all this is also true of most all cartridges...
Just take Bruno's question of .44 vs .45 and trying to simplify the difference to just the Diameter which also varies within each caliber
There is a multitude of both and that is without going to the older outdated rounds..
There are .45 caliber handgun rounds that make a .44 rem mag look wimpy in comparison
It just isn't that easy a .44 mag loaded with a +280 gr full jacketed say a 300 gr Barnes Buster will punch a neat clean .429 hole through somebody without much Tissue damage at all, so unless it is a fatal organ shot it will probably not kill.. Where you take the same gun and load it with a 210 gr High Expansion petal style HP and that same non-fatal shot might very well kill or seriously maim, it is just not that simple when you start discussing Terminal Impact ballistics ..
Huge amounts of money in testing and development has gone into finding the best designs for each use of each caliber and cartridge... so ammo and bullet selection can become as important as weapon selection :)
At this point in time, in a handgun I'd take a sig .357 with max + custom loads over anything else.
So true,I spent two yrs in nam as a navy corpsman,66/67 first yr doing forensics on the VC, second yr running a morge on a hospital ship.
At any rate, the M 16 rnds came in 3 diff types, all were 55 grn bullits, all copper clad as per geneva convention rules.
One type used against armored VC units had steel or tungston carbide cores,The other, issued to infintry were lead core, none fragmented unless the troops filed of the tips as was common practice but ill advised.
The lead cores were designed by stoner to yaw (tumble) when entering the body, the damage caused thru an M16, was amazing, tiny entry hole, exit hole the size of a softball or larger.
Someone tell me why some. 45 barrels are rifled and some are not.
Unless it is an old muzzle loader type .45 I would say they are rifled. I have a baby eagle 45 that has polygonal rifling. Hard to see unless you hold it to the light just right. Instead of grooves it has flat spots machined in the barrel.
Are you talking about in flight or once they hit a body? All modern guns are rifled except for shotguns, my Judge was even rifled. Some of the old, really old, stuff (blackpowder) was smoothbore, but when they found out the difference in accuracy...well, lets say the rest is history.
Some full metal jacket bullets are known to twist and yaw once they hit the body, namely .223 & I think 7.62x39.
All modern pistols and rifles are rifled & the bullets are spinning rather quickly when they exit the muzzle, the exception would be a slug out of a shotgun...and then some shotguns have slug barrels that are rifled.
Still carring my Ruger P89DC @ the 4 o'clock in an uncle Mikes IWB, with an extra mag at the 9 o'clock in an old lock blade sheath.
I continue to go back and forth between my Para-Ordnance P-14 (.45 ACP) and Colt Detective Special (.38).
I reload the ammunition myself on a Lee Turret Press. Cheap entry model for beginners that's served me well for 4 years.
Boot knife just seems to always be there as well.
VA CCW reciprocity with other states is a head scratcher at times but Maryland CCW laws have forced me south when M/C riding.
Cheers
Great Googely Moogely! NYS has finally seen fit to issue me a permit! Soon as I take the required safety courses, I will be upgraded to CCW status. :y
Now to get a piece of iron... I am sticking with very small frame in the .380 category. I found a SIG that fits my hands remarkably, but it is 200 bucks more than the S&W or near equal stats. Anybody have an opinion on which current manufactures have greater reliability vs price? I dont want to sell ALL my straights to buy a pistol, just SOME of them!
Magpie, PM sent...
Congrats BTW!!!!
CCW in NY???
That is an incredible feat!
Getting one in NY is like getting a BBS shave first time out of the gate!
Remember, even with it, I'm pretty sure you can't carry in NYC.
Congrats and all the best.
ROCK ISLAND has some interesting offerings in the 1911 clones. Their compact 9MM look interesting. If I didn't already have my CCW stuff, I'd be looking at those real hard.
BTW, I CCW a 1911 Colt Commander. ;)
My "dream pistol" for CCW would be a Commander size pistol in .38 Super.
Hey Wullie! Good to see you still exist!
The problem is the definition of "concealed carry" Most of you guys have a very different version than mine.
I am a whopping 5'5 and a 150 odd pounds, so I have a lot less room on my person in which to conceal. Top that off with most of my business where I feel an additional need, takes place while I am wearing costumes which are often form fitting.
This means it has to fit in pocket, or in a small "pouch" I can have "Magnus Melior Amplius" but that would be for home, or ordinary life carry. Go get your dream gun Wullie.. its right here... Colt 1911 Combat Commander .38 Super Pistol NIB : Semi Auto Pistols at GunBroker.com
Size doesn't matter. :p
I'm 5'8" at 175#. I carry mine in an OLD FAITHFUL inside the waistband rig.
"Quick-Assemble-Kit" - Inside the Waistband - Hip - Gun Holster Kit - Old Faithful Holsters
Mine rides just behind my right hip and a loose fitting shirt, with the tail out hides the whole mess. I also wear a "wife beater" undershirt to keep something between my hide and the holster. I can tuck my shirt tail in with that rig and since I also carry a big GEC trapper in a little holster on the belt, it breaks up the outline very nicely.
I'd rather carry my Hi-Powr as it is a bit lighter, but the fat grips on that double stacked magazine make it just a bit more noticeable every now and then. I'll probably carry it more this winter when I'm wearing a jacket most of the time.
That Colt you linked to is NICE. TOO nice for my pocket book. :( Oh well.
Springfield Champion Operator with Bill Wilson's SS Eight round mags. I carry in an assortment of holsters, but my favorite is a lo-profile from bill wilson
I don't currently have a CCW, partially because I don't currently own any handguns, just several rifles and a Mosin Nagant is not concealable unless you have taken lessons from the Highlander who can somehow conceal a full size sword with no problem. Actually the Mosin is my largest rifle but still.
I want to get a 1911 eventually. Once I do that I would like to get my CCW, but I don't really feel like bothering with the license until I have the gun... Now to save the money for the handgun.
I would Run not Walk to go get your CCW now if at all possible, get it all in line and done...
Here in LA county we about have a heart attack when we hear about people that live in places they can get CCWs but don't :)
I have friends that are in CCW friendly counties and I beg them to get theirs just so I can live through them! Haha
I hold a Concealed Glock 23 to protect my family and my business. It's very reliable, accurate and packs 13 40 cal rounds.
This beauty was passed down to me this past weekend, :D
My grandfather carried it concealed in 1910. He was 3 years old,,,
yes we start young in the South.
I had a little time on my hands, so why not try to save her. (See what SRP has done to me.) :rofl2:
A Smtih & Wesson Cast Iron Cap Revolver. The grips slide open to carry some extra ammo (Caps).

While CCW isn't really a thing up here where I live and so my participation in such discussions is accordingly limited, when I saw this posted by the guys at Car Talk on their FB page, I immediately thought of this thread.
My question is this: if one were to throw a tarp over this, would it count as CCW?
:)
Have a great week everyone!

God, I love that picture!! It needs a sign though, perhaps something like, "tailgating not advised" or something of that sort. As for your question, I think a tarp would be OK because the gun isn't considered concealable. Where they would have a crap fit is probably transporting the powder for that. I mean, what's that burn per shot, a pound of black powder??
I CCW a flashlight, realy good if it's dark:)
Not even the police here can have a gun on them, unless they are protecting the king or other vip's.
Just a little warning here gents,,, one more time..
This thread is about what and how you carry, not about your thoughts on why you might need to... as per the new rules posted about Gun Control discussion not being allowed on SRP at this time...
