I would resist the temptation to tap early. The tree has a natural tendency to heal itself when injured. An early tap, may very well close off its flow before the best of the season is upon you!
Do not tap any tree under 16" in diameter. Silver maples will give you syrup, but it will take way more sap then from a sugar maple. Depending on your location, you might get 20 gal per tap, (average for me anyway) When boiling indoors make sure to vent the house or your humidity levels will skyrocket!
And yes, by all means, pour it on snow, and eat a cone! ESPECIALLY good, if you over cook, and caramelize it!
    Good Luck!

I'd love to see pictures of that.

When I moved back to Norway I talked my grocer into selling maple syrup.

How much syrup will that yield? About half a tablespoon?

depending on sugar content of sap, it can take between 38 and 44 gal of sap to make a single gallon of syrup

I am jealous, I love maple syrup but it cost about 20 bucks a gallon for quality stuff where I am from. No maple trees in site, but we do have pine which makes good pitch, great for starting fires, not so much for taste.
