There will be what is called a "Texas Star" at nearly every IPSC match. And boy do they move! He's a video:
IPSC - Texas Star - YouTube
Never tried a "Texas Star".
I do recall one intersting afternoon, when I shot a rattler from horseback with a 38-40 Colt SAA. About the time I torched off on the damn snake, I remembered that I wasn't riding "my' horse. Just so happens that bronc I was riding took strong objection to that pistol going off three feet from his right ear. I got two shots off and hit the snake in the middle of the first jump as the rodeo commenced. I doubt I'd have won any points for style but we survived.
I had my hands full trying not to get my ass dumped in the vicinity of a half shot snake and trying to hang on the my pistol. My pard said it was quite a show. I wish I could have seen it rather than been it.
Does that count? :p
:rofl2: Now that made me laugh!

That is kind of the idea. A target on a platform that moves however the speed would be about 4x faster than that Texas star thing. The idea being many people who think of themselves as great shots when shooting at a static target literally can't hit the broadside of a barn when it is moving fairly fast and you are being timed.
The Texas Star moves as fast as the skill of the shooter. The idea is to balance the star as best as you can by choosing which plates to knock off depending on how the star is moving. The guys shooting in the video are pretty good and kept the star reasonably balanced and thereby minimizing its movement. If you mess up and get it off balance too much, it spins incredibly fast. I've seen good shooters empty their magazine trying to hit the last fast moving plate.
I just got a SWEET deal on a a BRNO Target stock that I'm going to drop my 452 into. It is a "factory second," with a small repaired crack in the butt, so it was about the same price as a Boyds stock would be. Something of an impulse buy, but I figure I'll never see a deal like that again. Pics will definitely follow once it arrives, but here is one on an Ultra Lux with BRNO match sights.

BTW, I shot this last night. I was getting a lot of excess wax on my ammo, so I'll blame that along with myself (a little under the weather) for the less than stellar performance. Luckily, there were some free leftover donuts from the afternoon NRA pistol class to cheer me up.

That looks like a fun little rifle.
I had a lot of fun with small bore stuff a LONG time ago.
Since I've moved back into "civilization", I don't burn much powder any more. I used to live so far out in the boonies, I could shoot anything I had in any direction I wanted to and didn't have to worry about hitting anything much other than the ground. I miss it. On the other hand I don't miss having to drive 60 miles one way to get a beer or 25 miles one way for a grocery run. :)
What is the purpose of the eccentric target? To keep you from using the larger rings?
I honestly don't know. My two guesses are:
To make you "gamble" a bit; if you shoot at the bull and miss on the narrow side, a little distance can cost a lot of points, but shooting at a 9 or 8 or the other side is much safer.
To make it so that you don't just aim for the center of the black.
I only shoot them because the guys at the club cleaned out a locker and put a 18 inch stack out for grabs.
Glad it worked for you. We have the kids on our YHEC team check this every time they get into position (at least they are supposed to). It does help them a lot. They are shooting silhouette with .22 and muzzle loader but the principles are the same as for target shooting.
The other day I shot a 90 on an A32 (offhand, 50 feet); two bulls, two eights, and nines.. I'd just lightened the trigger up a little bit more, and I'm trying out Federal 711b instead of my usual CCI SV. I'm pleased, as the last time I shot an A32 (maybe a month ago) I scored an 80.
My Klinsky target stock arrived today. Got the buttpad and cheekrest adjusted. It would be nice if I could get the buttpad lower (I have a long neck, and the rings are high), but my head is only tilted a little bit while shooting. I've got to say, this thing is HEAVY. The barrel is now totally free floating, as this stock can accept a bull barrel, and I still need to get a torque driver to get the action screws in properly.

10 shots, 50 feet, offhand, 16x magnification. The bottom two were just bad shots, but check out the five touching! Not bad for a first attempt with a new stock, I think. I have to get used to the weight!

Maybe additional cheek rest could be in order...make it fit you...
I am a rifle instructor. Right now I am shooting through the NRA 4 position skills test. Up to sharp shooter, should not have any problem hitting distinguished expert. The blue target is from my 10/22 with a scope sitting position at 25 yards. The black target is an official 50 foot target shot from a Remington 510 with iron sights which is what you have to use for the official shoots. FYI, a 50 score is perfect.

This past Wednesday I went to the range with a buddy of mine. I finally got to sight in my S&W 686P. It was waaaay off but I managed to dial it in to the point where I only needed the orange bulls-eye sticker to cover the holes in my shoot n see targets. I love that Smith...
I did something similar years ago on Marron Station in Western Australia, took a crack at a goat with a Remington .44 cap and ball, and suddenly had a bout 4 inches of whither in front of me as my hoss hit the deck on her head, put in 4 huge straight ahead bucks, I smacked myself in the gob with my revolver, but stayed aboard the hurricane deck of my cayuse, luckily I was well screwed down in my old Schneider polley {mick mouse thigh knee pads and 4 inch cantle} would not have like to have ridden that one out in my slick fork !! I was happy she bucked as we were in fairly heavy mulga and a bolt would not have been a good thing>> Nice to see we are just as mad both sides of the pond, Iam over 50 and should know better !!
Cheers

Stuff like that kind of breaks up the monotony don't it?
I love old C&B six shooters too.
I just happened to be riding my dad's old saddle that day. It had a "little wonder" tree. WE called 'em mouse traps or widow makers. They were great to stay in and rough to get loose from in a hurry.
Never rode any of the gear you lads use. Always thought I'd like to but never had a chance. From what I can see it works just as good as what we derived from the Spaniards. ;)
I have got one of those stock whips you boyos use. Heck of a lot easier to run than the big old "bull snake" whips over here.
SALUD!

Slightly off topic but...Here is how I was doing today. 20 yds. If I could only do this 12 times in a row!:rofl2:

Looks like it's time to switch to five spots, Tim.
Groups like that get expensive!
Nice shooting!
Wish I could just pull a bow! My tore up shoulders won't even allow me to pull 30lbs! To much ligament dmage... To bad, cause I think I would enjoy bow hunting..
Same here. It hurts to start my lawn mower. Maybe I ought to build a kick starter for it. One fo the reasons I quit driving big rigs was that it hurt to swap cogs. Arthritis in my wrists and shoulders takes the fun out of a lot of things these days.
That is some fine shooting with that bow.
After a horrible first practice with a new rifle ( the old one the firing pin was only striking half the time and the first practice someone had filed down the front sight post and I couldn't actual see the tip) I decided go try my hand with a circular front sight aperture. My prone score went down slightly but my standing has improved enough to offset it. I leave for the Colorado drill meet the thursday before Easter.
Thanks, here is the end that started my shooting the single spot this week. It was my last end on Thursday night. I was so mad that I thought on the last end I would try to Robin Hood an arrow. You can see on the adjacent spots how I was all over the place. My best end for the night. I am going to try the single for leagues this week. I still have 11 left from my new dozen and need a few more nocks!:D

Some of you might like this, its a marksmanship training video for the M1 garand put out by the US army for WW2. Part one is missing, it dealt with sight picture, but the remaining information is pretty good.

Why is it, I wonder, that every country has the opinion that their riflemen are the best in the world?! :)
Mick
Well, I wouldn't tell them that either, as it probably wouldn't be true (although it'd be interesting to know the answer to that, except of course if you were the worst riflemen in the world, in which case every man and his dog with a gun would be having a go at taking over your country) , but you could say something like, "Ya keep shootin' like that 'n' ya might as well just put the gun to yer own 'ead, save the enemy the waste of ammo!" That might inspire those riflemen that are lagging behind to smarten up. That or allocate them a desk and papers, or issue them with a dish-cloth, peeler and a sack of potatoes. :) I think Breaker Morant stated it well, just before the British murdered him via firing squad, he said, "Shoot straight you bastards! Don't make a mess of it!" Be a good creed for riflemen to follow I reckon, certainly a great slogan for a Range Instructor to shout at you on the firing range. :)
Mick
Or middle of the road...
"You are known as some of the most mediocre riflemen in the world. You hit your target some of the time, but miss it often, too. Everyone is kind of afraid of you, and they get more afraid if there are alot of you and not many of them. We will train you to keep up this proud tradition of occasionally making people nervous"
This post gave me the push into buying a new bow. Two days ago I bought a longbow. This is at 20 yds. As you can see my groups opened up a bit! I scored my first game today for a baseline and got a 137 out of a possible 300. Lots of room for improvement. I am going to use this bow for spring league.

what did you get for a longbow? Maker and weight? Cedar Arrows?
