Awesome shooting 32 what bow were you shooting before the longbow?
Ness what are you shooting?
I've got a longbow on order with some nice cedar arrows coming in too. I haven't shot a longbow in a few years but hope I'll be as good as I used to!

Thanks, My "Target" bow is a '07 Bowtech Constitution. Long stabilizers, [Custom by me!:D] 1/4" grind True spot scope, etc. etc. It is set up for 20 yds indoor and that is it. It does one thing and does it well. Very specialized. I have two more sets of limbs etc. for it so I can set it up many ways. I have hunted with it but I haven't got anything!
My present hunting bow is a PSE Evo. It works great but I am thinking about selling it because I hate putting it away for 10 months of the year. My main issue with it is that I want to play with my toys. It has 63-72 lb limbs that make it to much to shoot 150 arrows at a time. I could buy lighter limbs... But that would be like buying a Mustang with a 4 cylinder engine.:rofl2:
I have various other bows, compound and recurves. One of the neat things about archery is that you can do with and make it what you want. My target teammates that i placed second with in the winter leagues think it is cool that I am trying another style for spring. One is going to shoot with his Olympic style recurve.
Good luck with your longbow. They take a lot of practice and time to master. Remember the whole point of it is to have FUN with whatever you choose.

P.S. One thing with razors is that they don't take up so much room. they don't bother my wife quit so much!
I shoot an English longbow made by Gerald Welsh of Alaska AKA Welshman Longbow Company. It is 57 lb at 29" and a sweet shooting bow and has lots of eye appeal too. I also have a Blue Ridge reflex/deflex laminated longbow that also shoots smooth, its 49 lb at 29".I use port orford cedar arrows with field points. Just 2 Longbows for me, now straight razors are another story HeHeHe
WOW what are limbs?, I have a 65lb pull Bear hunting bow from when that actually ment something, (got me to buy it) and now I dont beven recoginse some ot these thing they are using now.,does anyone remember or know how to get the string mearsurementfrom a bow? I tried to get it restrung from the only place around here said it was a 28" but he didnt have one and said noone uses them any more,so I gotta get one from the net.Is there a way to tell what string I need?

Interesting thread...
Do any of you folks shoot at Camp Perry in the summer? I volunteer as a Block Officer for Pistol Phase, although I think this year they're going to move me up to Tower-Talker.
The riser is the heavier piece in the middle that has the grip for your hand. The limbs are then on the top and bottom. By changing limbs on my Constitution I can change the draw weight from 35 to 70 pounds and anything in between. The longbow is a different story!
As far as your string goes for your Bear it shouldn't be a big issue. Might cost more than the bow is worth... That is to someone else. If you have a history with it I would certainly get a new string. String makers have charts of what is needed for most anything. PM me if you are interested and I will try to point you in the right direction.

I have never shot any kind of firearm competitively. This last week I had a talk with a friend that shoots Olympic style recurve very well. He is trying to sucker a guy that thinks he is a good pistol shot into a competition against him with his bow for $100. He will win with the bow!

Tim, I haven't built many arrows for a longbow, but... Especially if you're only shooting spots, it might be worth trying much heavier points (like 135 or better) with a short shaft that puts you on the light side of the spine chart for that weight and length.
Basically, get as much weight forward of center as possible while still keeping a dynamic spine on the soft side.
If you're having a hard time finding shafts to fit that, the first place I'd deviate is on the length, going for a slightly longer shaft that spines ok.
Of course... that depends on how much weight you're pulling too, I suppose.
I like your way of thinking. I will have related questions in the future but for now i feel I have much more to gain in my form than in the arrow. I have only shot this thing 4 times. My baseline score was 137. My first posted score for leagues was 133. [Don't criticize my math at this time of night!] but it was something like a 35- 36 -62. I changed my bow shoulder. I was trying to lock it but when i relaxed it improved. Immediately after, I scored again and i got a 156. This style is fun, if I pinwheel the X i am elated!
I was talking to a friend that went to state this year and shot barebow. he shot against and beat a guy that shot full length 2712's with 300 grain tips. He was aiming with the point of the arrow. He must have been close to hitting the ceiling of the gym! Not a bad idea but it didn't work.
For you that don't understand the nomenclature Easton sizes their arrows with 4 numbers. the first 2 are the diameter in 64ths of an inch. the second pair is the wall thickness in thousands of an inch. So a 2712 is 27/64ths of an inch in diameter and 12 thousands wall thickness. that makes more sense than a lot of the companys out there. ;)

Thanks for the info, I should have said it was a lrecurved bow, and yes its old, used to use it for small game when I was a kid in camp. I might just take you up on your offer if I can find anywhere to shoot it here in suburbia, people freak out very easily this day and age....
thx

Ever since I dropped my CZ into the target stock, I've been wanting something a bit lighter and more agile. Today, it finally came together as the upper and optic arrived.
New Frontier polymer lower
Tactical Solutions AR-22 LT upper
Primary Arms Microdot on a UTG medium riser

I don't have a scale, but she should be between 5 and 6 lbs, whereas my CZ is between 9 and 10

Damn Critters don't stand a chance.

Looks like someone is becoming a gun nut...welcome to the asylum.
I am getting a little better with the long bow. I scored a personal best of 188 last night.

Interesting thread, gents! We've got some shooters on this forum, no doubt. I don't shoot like I used to (sold a lot of my best stuff long ago-other hobbies). Anyway, I'm a lot more low tech. than many of you. I will sometimes take my teenage boys out with my Ruger Single-Six .22LR (with the convertible magnum cylinder), a sack of taters, and a couple boxes of hollow-points. Fun ensues, and the hits are quite explosive-instant mashed potatoes, anyone?
edit: I will add this: Back in the days when my boys were going to Scout summer camp every year, they were expected to (and always did) get the best groups of the week, whether as Cubs with air rifles, or later with .22's. I'd like to think it was because of the fundamentals I taught them; I think target shooting is a great way to teach a young man body discipline and control. Case in point-I had a boy in my troop on the range one year who was a total spaz-extremely ADHD, just all over the place on the bench. In fact, I think myself and the rangemaster were in more danger BEHIND him than anything downrange. 1st day he couldn't even get on the paper! By the end of the week, we had him locked down with an expensive Austrian target rifle brought out especially for him, and he managed to qualify and get his shooting merit badge.
Had me and my son out pinging the 500 yard iron maidon today. I had a muzzle break put on his 270, so we took it out to confirm the zero.. That thing is a great lil weapon! Tikka, great stock rifle.
6 in 9" is good. the target I pictures is 15 3/4' in diameter. The white spot or 5 in the center is about 3" and the 4 ring is 6 1/4". 60 arrows total for a perfect score of 300. If I could shoot 12 ends like I pictured I would score a 264. We all need our goals!
I like primary arms. I've got one of their multi reticule 1X. Only cheap decent one I could find with a reticule selection I liked. Good customer service, too. I may get one of their magnifiers down the road. I wish they'd make T reticules or chevrons. I really like those.
I'd been shooting my AR-22 recently, but I did this yesterday.

Shot a recurve bow for the first time. Was part of a archery class I took.
Pick a spot and shoot. 7 inch group from 15 yards. Not bad for the first time.
Nice job; looks like your a natural.
Good shooting! Now move your sight up and to the right a bit. :rofl2:
lol actually there was no sight on it....the arrows wouldn't stick in the middle of the target they were too chewed up so i aimed for the white lol still off tho!
Did ya see any of the Olympic archery?? They are shooting 70 meters or 75 yards or so, at a 48" overall target that looks like a thumb tack, and hitting a 4" ten ring ( I could be off on that ) . With Recurves and fingers on the string , but the bows are heavy in weight and about a 48 pound draw .
So no one has written on here in a while.
How is everyone going with the target shooting?
I didn't end up getting my longbow but have an Olympic style recurve on order.
Been taking some lessons and loving it.
Had to do my yearly qualification for my HR-218 carry, last weekend, easy.
Spent a lot of time lately at Bass Pro archery range with our Genesis bow. this February, I'm going to step up a bit, to a hunting caliber compound bow & leave the boy with the Genesis. We have been shooting the bow for about 8 months & I never knew it would be as fun as it is. It's like straight razors, I wish I discovered bows years ago.
Not on the team anymore so I dont get the the range as often as I'd like. I have been working with a new Walther PPS at 7, 10 and 15 meters as much as I can recently. Tiny little thing but it shoots like a dream.
I've been slamming carbon arrows in 3 inch groups from 50 yards from my Compound with a Viper four pin sight on 2-D. I'm happy with that.
Mission Riot from Mathew's Archery
