When i was a pup (at least not such an old dog ) I was in to modifying BMWs. This gave way to a couple of Porsches including a twin turbo which would definitely get out of it's own way. :-)
I also raced a fair amount including road racing, off road racing, pro rally, Solo I & II, blah blah blah. You're right, it definitely gets in your blood.

Muscle cars, sports cars and hotrods OH Yeah. I am thinking C5 Corvette next. Never had a ‘vette. I am now old enough to afford one now and still young enough to enjoy it.
Have always had a hard time not modifying cars to get more speed.
Have had Corvair with corsa motor. ’67 big block Galaxie (want another). Celica with 5spd and webber. Couple of hot rodded F100s and a very fast 70 1/2 RS (never lost a street race).
I have been struggling with the 03 F150 I drive now. I want the power it can build, but I know I will tear it apart in short order if I modify it. So for now I am being patient.

Thanked: 2027Building and tuning todays modular engines is SOOO much easier than back in the day.
If I wanted to run race gas (103 octane) in my roush, all that was needed is to plug my SCT calibrator into the OBD port and change the tune, takes 10 seconds.
You can get tunes over the net sent direct to your computor, download them into the car.
No more carbs,distributors, headaches

Thanked: 884Those days are long gone for me. I spent the late 60's throwing my hard earned money out the tail pipes of this old thing.
Wish I still had it.
Had a '67 El Camino with a hot 327 after that one. No pics. Wish I still had it. LMAO
Had a couple of street rods after that. Wish I still had 'em.
Hot rodded a bunch of old Cummins and Cat diesels back in the day of mechanical fuel pump, before all this air pollution BS came along. I was pretty fond of that left lane going up a hill. Built a big old K-model Cummins once that pegged out Cummin's 800HP dyno. I know it was making 800 on the ground, but the guy running the dyno was scared I would blow his machine up. THe knot head that owned the truck wanted it to go FAST. I set him with a double overdrive 13spd and 3.33 rears. On paper, 2100rpm, it was geared out at 152MPH with 1100R24.5 tires and wheels. It would haul some serious ass. He lost his license in it from being caught doing in excess of 80mph and the one that took him down was a 119mph citation in a 55 zone. I drove it for a couple of months until he found another idiot to tear it up. It was impressive for an 18 wheeled speed machine in the 80's.
I think every highway patrol officer in my part of the state had a picture of that truck. I'd get pulled over at least once a day and they always asked, "Where's Ed?" I'd tell 'em he was riding his bicycle like a good little boy. Had one give me a lecture about how fast that truck was etc etc. When he wound down, I told him he hadn't seen nothing and if he really wanted to know how fast it was to go up the road a couple of miles and I'd show him if wouldn't write me ticket. He wouldn't go for it.
Worst thing about that pig was trying to slow it down. 4 axles worth of brakes ain't enough. The guy he hired to herd it around had thermo-nuclear melt down with it and left a bunch of scrap metal on the highway one afternoon when it around 110°F. Dumbass didn't have enough sense to back out of it on a long pull and it melted very spectacularly.
Hot rodded a few old Harley's over the years but I'm getting too damn old to be messing with that stuff. My reflexes aren't what they used to be and I'd end up killing myself or somebody else if I still played that game.
It was fun while it lasted.Last edited by Wullie; 11-10-2012 at 04:31 PM.

Thanked: 2Hahah these are great stories. I am debating if I want to upgrade the turbos or not on my car this winter for next seasons. but I am honestly pretty happy with what I have now.. I know its not 'fast' per say.. but its pretty damn quick. I beat 90% of the cars I pull up next too.. Unless its one of those c6 z06's haha.

12 or 24 valve? Mines a 12 fast approaching 350,000. The trick with these is to get ahead and lay down a smoke screen to blind your competition!
Top speed isn't the game for me. Going around a corner at 70 mph that any sane person would do at 25 gets the adrenalin going for me.

Yup. I like it. Speed and cars are just plain fun. Friday nights are my drive nights and I hit the mountain roads (I love California!). I've hit things and nearly died plenty, but thankfully God protects fools. Honestly, I like to mash on anything that runs.
As a lower income individual who just can't seem to prioritize his funds, I tend to choose seat time over upgrades and am forced to choose lateral G's over linear G's. So, I drive 240SX's and I drive them a lot.
My '92 is stock, my DD and runs great through the curves. I am getting to upgrade the '95 slowly. I did the differential a few months ago. This weekend I just finished installing a nice aluminum radiator and fan set, removing AC, setting my idle and timing, fixing the chain rattle, some cleanup, new seals, wires, plugs, hoses type of maintenance. Fired her up Sunday and was proud of my wrench turning. Next is intake. Then clutch, get the Greddy headers on, custom exhaust, brakes install (Brembo, SS lines, and PBR Pads). Then cage, plug sunroof, and so on. I have dreams of SCCA ITA, but am far off.
Sometimes I get to do work for Laguna Seca.
Drive safe! You know what I mean
