Thanked: 55How many cut their own hair?
I don't know if this qualifies as one of the "finer things in life" but how many here cut their own hair (not talking about shaving here obviously)?
Several months ago I decided that it couldn't be that hard and was certainly more convenient and cheaper than paying $30, having to make an appointment and sitting around in a waiting room.
I've been pleasantly surprised by the process. I can cut my hair and keep it at the perfect length since it only takes me 10 minutes to do the job now.
It looks at least as good as before and you quickly become an expert since you have a client of one!
I find it relaxing in a similar way to shaving with a straight edge.
Anyone else?

Re: How many cut their own hair?
+1 here. Ive cut my hair since i was around 17 and that was due to the barbers closest to me closing.
Back then i had no interests at all in shaving as i had nothing to shave but if memory serves the barber at the time was like 3rd or 4th generation and he had all of his ancestors old kit on display. All the old clippers, SR's, honed etc. Infact when he closed i remember the old barbers sign going into a skip... man id love to get my hands on that kit now!!!
It does save a small fortune doing it yourself and like you say only 10 or so minutes. Once in a while though i would like to go and soak the atmosphere in of a barbers but there is only them upmarket salons around now so i womt waste my cash.

gcbryan,
I have a 'high & tight' and have had so for many years - I use a set of electric clippers to maintain it.
IIRC the last haircut I had at a barbers was in the middle 1980s
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ

Thanked: 55There are still a few old fashioned barber shops around but I remember those as a kid and the haircuts were not to my liking
It should be possible to get the same kind of hair cut that I'm giving myself since we're both using electric clippers but as I recall (at least in those days) all the hair cuts that came out of those shops were alike...shingle like cut up the back of the neck and a wide cut around the ears with some kind of oil sprinkled in your hair.

Thanked: 485Number three and the top and two on the sides or a four and the top and a three on the sides is what I normally do with my electric razor. I think I generally do a better job that most barbers I would go to for the price I'm prepared to pay. Although in Sydney in 1985 when I was in the Army I had a nice number one with scissors by a barber with a horribly disfigured face. For some reason that reminds me of a Nick Cave song (great artist by the way)...
Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Thanked: 55For me...number 8 on top (less on top these days though) and number 7 for the rest and for the very front part (on a woman you might say bangs) I do that with scissors.
YouTube video taught me to do that with small snips and at a 90 to 45 degree angle for a more natural and random look rather than the "bowl cut" look
I follow up with smaller battery powered trimmers for around the ears and along the neck line.
Except for the trimming I could do most of this without looking into a mirror (although I do refer to a mirror from time to time).

Old korean ladies give the best cuts on the military base for a close to a high and tight without breaking the flat top barrier, where i am. .. I used to cut my own hair for years in the military with nothing but beard trimmers and a bic on the sides... Twice a week while serving in the Presidential Honor Guard in D.C.

I cut my own hair as well. I'm always left feeling rather smug at the money I save in doing so! Used to be into punk in a big way in my teens so my friends and I used to cut our own hair as well as each others. It was all about crazy colours and spikes and butchering it so it had it's own unique style.
When I was 21 I went to a Turkish barber when travelling. I had a bleach blonde quiff piled high like the Stray Cats at the time and asked for it to be tidied up. I mentioned wanting it to look like Elvis and his eyes lit up. He must have been thinking Elvis being recruited by the Army and took the clippers to it. Not happy walking out with a short top and sides but I'll bet it cheered him up no end!
The plus side to this was the shave that came with it and the traditional products he used. Absolutely loved it and realised shaving could be enjoyable. I went out that day and bought my first straight razor and never looked back. I cursed him and praised him in equal measures that day to myself but I'm really glad it was one of those happy accidents that resulted in an epiphony moment for me. 15 years later I still cut my hair be it a bit more conservative and I enjoy straight shaving more than ever.
One thing that annoys me is I always tend to catch the knuckle of my left index finger in the scissors when doing a particular bit at the back. I like to keep my knives and scissors sharp so always end up bleeding like a stuck pig no matter how careful I try to be. Anyone else have this problem?
