What hardnes does a normal contact wheel have?
I have been looking for contact wheels for building a grinder. I might have found a couple of good wheels, but I don't know if these are to hard/soft. Their surface is 92 Shore hardness. The same store also sells same wheels with normal black vulcanised rubber surface.
What would be wise?
92Shore wheel made of PU
Rubber wheel ( needs to be turned in a lathe to get nice flat running surface )
What would you do?
Original contact wheel are very expensive over here, and these I can get in the same width and diameter as normal contact wheels for a lot less.

I would not worry about the hardness, I think both the rubber and poly wheels would work. I would get the wheel with the flattest face, and the wheel that runs the most true.
Sunray is an economical sources of wheel here in the US.
I would say skimp where you can on the grinder but get the best contact wheel you can get. It is the most important part of the grinder.

Thanked: 202I am in same r5at race. Charlie you are lucky to have that resource. Here on continent we have no such luxury and to import them from US customs and tax make the cost sky high. For that reason we just trying to do our best.

Thanks Charlie for your words. I think I'm going for the 92Shore PU wheel. I'll put it in a lathe on a pin and take of a few millimetres to make sure it's flat and runs true.
Like adrspach said, it's hard and costly to get a real contactwheel over here. The cheapest one could find in 200mm x 50mm ( Should be same as an 8" wheel approx ) would cost me at least $350, for 1 wheel... I can build the entire grinder for that.
These wheels run in the $50-75 which is a huge difference for a hobbyist to build a small grinder. I found a place in Germany that sells complete grinders ready to go, but they cost $2400 excluding shipping, which will be another $100 easy. That's money I don't have you will understand.
Ok, never mind. I think I'm gonna give the top wheel a go and build my way around that. Since the 8" seems to be the most used one for most grinders.

I don't know the rules in Belgium. I've had packages from the US and Japan for several hundreds euros. Most never got looked at. The handful of times they got looked at by customs, I just had to pay the 10 euros administrative fee, which is basically a fee they get for picking up the parcel and looking at it without actually investigating which tax rules should apply.

Thanked: 8Hi
Try Alistair at downlandengineeringservices.com ( no affiliation ) he sells grinders and I believe, wheels separately !
I would think that any shipping would be a lot less costly within the EU !
