Has anyone here ever made a wedge?
Good day all,
I was looking at some metal the other day while cleaning the garage that Bob had given me. By coincidence I had posted the pics of the weekend at Bob's in a kilting forum since bunch of the guys are getting into straights and double edges.
While it would take quite a bit of retooling to get my shop to do hollow grounds I have the setup for flat grinding and was wondering about trying that out.
Thanks,
Jim

Thanked: 170A true wedge would take forever to hone, since you would have to remove metal from the entire side every time you honed it. I have seen posts about folks grinding 1/4 hollows with a bench grinder. Hard to do precision work, though, without a belt grinder. Maybe you could trade something out with Bob to use his? Good luck on your journey. What's the address of the kilting forum?

I do have a belt grinder, a KMG, I just been grinding flat grinds for my blades. Unfortunately I live 4+ hours from Bob's. I was down there for a weekend when he taught me to make straights.

Thanked: 170Now you need an 8 inch wheel. And a 6 inch - a 4 inch, a 2 inch (put it on the top of you flat platten set up). etc, etc, etc. Not a cheap journey.

Thanked: 170I used the square tubing with holes in it that you can get at Menards, etc.. for my 6 inch wheel - works fine, and a lot cheaper than solid bar stock. The plastic wheels from USA Knifemakers work fine, and are cheaper than the rubber ones KMG sells. Like I said earlier, the 2 inch wheel works great on top of the flat platten setup, so you don't need an arm there. Good luck.
