Default Want to try make a stright. Cmp154? ?

Hi guy been stright shaving for a few months after buying a nice razor off here. But now would like to have a go at making my own. I only have cmp 154 steel and not sure if it would work ok? I have basic tools but could possibly get the use of a 72 inch knife grinder I'd like to make a fix blade style any hint would be a huge help[emoji27]

Good to hear all is going well still Jay.

sorry I can't help with the steel choice but I as sure someone with the knowlege will chime in with some useful advice

have fun & I hope to see what you come up with

found this from a blade forum and it seems to be a possible steel choice no harm in giving it a go if its available
not sure on the tempering etc requirements
    Cpm 154
    Saved,
    to shave another day.

I had a knife that was made from cpm154. Funny thing is it was a knock off of a spyderco knife. Well the spyderco knife it was a copy of used some mild steel that didn't hold on edge very well nor did it get very sharp. But the knockoff which was 20 bucks had the CPM154 and it was super sharp and held it for a long time. It was a tougher steel though so it took longer to hone but lasted long enough to justify the extra effort required.

try a bit of Autosol (Supercheap & Autobarn etc have it) on a cotton tip or a pencil rubber to polish it out, take your time & see how it goes,
if it's heavier you might try going to a 2000 grit or higher if you can get it wet & dry with a small cork or the rubber also then back to the autosol to polish it,
    see how you go.
but just don't get any of the polish on the edge at all, as it will kill the edge nearly instantly if you wipe it off & it will need refreshing at least if you do.
    Cheers Dion

CPM154 is a bit harder to work with than say standard carbon steels like 1084 or O1, but certainly will make a very good razor if properly heat treated. Being stainless, you will probably have to send it out for heat treatment as stainless steel needs better control (and higher temps) so an even heat oven is really needed vs. just doing it in a forge.

Here is some info on CPM154 that you might find useful, including links to heat treating info and such:
