Thread: 01 Steel.

Just wondering why this seems to be the 'go to' for razor manufacturers in the USA? Is it because it's cheap and easy to source and works relatively well for making custom straights?

It would be nice to see some manufacturers using more interesting steels on a more common basis.

Perhaps this is done because people aren't forging their own steel and just taking pre made billets and using the stock removal method to create razors?

I think there is quite a bit more to making a custom straight razor than "stock removal".

Woah tough crowd this morning. I didn't say that's all there was to it, I simply said that's a method that is used when transforming a billet into a razor.

Not a razor maker(but It's been a pipe dream of mine from the start so I do know a bit), my understanding is that O1 is fairly cheap, it's easy to work with and it produces good results.

My guess would be for the reasons you mentioned and it probably is all you really need to produce a good blade that will hold an edge. You could probably mess with using other steel types but likely gain very little that is useful. OTH, using a common steel in producing a custom razor does not have the same exclusivity to some buyers as using a more exotic variety.

Why kick the sleeping dog! 01 Steel just works well, affordable, and takes a good long lasting edge, also the hardening is somewhat not so complicated.

Tape? Well. It's useless unless you have a trouble razor (big wedges or something) or want to preserve spine decoration for some reason.

dickerydee,,,, had I a full nights sleep last night I would have seen thru you after the first few posts,,,the way you have moved through the forum on your first day, set up a poll, managed to keep your sense of humor,,,,

,,,,,,only two individuals would have the capability & cojones to pull this off,,,
