Thread: grizzly g1015 knife grinder

Hey guys! I found a neighbor who forges knives. He has a g1015 knife grinder. I'm trying to determine if it's something I could buy and use to grind razors? I've looked at a lot of models for sale and plans, but everything is very expensive. There's got to be options that work that aren't well over $1,000, right?

Grizzly can be good goods. You are looking at a 2"wide belt. it would work and some attachments can be made or bought.

Yea i read through glens post, but wasnt sure how it would stack up against other options. Its not a 1", its a 2" x 72". At just under $600 it seems like it would be the best cost effective option, based on the others ive seen that are well over $1000. I dont mind using an 8" wheel because ill be making larger blades with hollows leaning towards wedges.

Come on Prodigy, you wouldn't hesitate to spend that on a great razor would you? Go for it! Tc

Haha, that is why there's an issue. I have been fortunate enough to get some very fine jnats, 4 iwasakis, a bruno wootz razor all in the last few months. I'm all tapped out until I sell something off

If you want to grind, it would be a good vestment

Here is what I know

I did a ton of research and the one thing I noted is that not one Grinder recommends them as a goto grinder -BUT- quite a few said the same thing

"I still have my Grizzly that I started with, I use it for Metal Hogging, still works great, but my "$$$$$ Grinder is my baby"

That told me that they were used by quite a few people to get into the hobby, and were set to the side still working fine, when it was upgrade time..
I gathered that dependability was not an issue

I only use mine for Razor Regrinds at this point in time, it does exactly what I need it to do..

It also makes short fast work of Sharpening tools, mower blades and knives

Thanks for that glen, I was hoping you would comment. So I guess it's not a bad idea for initial tinkering. I know the wheel on the belt side is 8". Can it be changed to a 6"? I could always just put a 6" on the left side too. I guess my main question is what would the next best option be?

They make a 8 inch and a 10 inch wheel

I have heard of / seen adaptions to do just about everything with these grinders, people have become very inventive with them on Youtube

Obviously there are much better units,, adjustments in sizes and speed are the hot button items

I bought mine to serve a purpose, it does that and more, if I ever decide to upgrade I guess I will be one of those guys saying I own a "$$$$ Grinder" it is the best thing since sliced bread,, but my ole'Grizzly still does the brute force work" LOL
