Default playing with new tempering setup

Here is my new tempering setup I have been playing with.

I took the bi metallic thermostat/switch out of the fry daddy, and am using a pid and relay to control the thing.

It holds the temps very steady, a lot less variation than my toaster oven.

I have peanut oil in it right now, it seems to do ok up to 450F.

Tempering in oil is not an original idea. Bob Allman's setup is what got me thinking about it.

I thought Max is also doing that. Or experimenting with that.

I have to try this. Does the steel still change color?

The steel does not change color, it is under the oil and away from the oxygen and does not form the oxides.

Can you do chicken at the same time as the blades?

I confess I have absolutely no idea how to make use of a PID controller but I suppose I should finish my forge before worrying about it. Then again, I could just buy your toaster oven!

Nice job with another inspiration for the rest of us!

So, for a layman who is still using a toaster oven...they could use a cookie sheet with oil in it to get the same results? Being a volunteer fireman makes me rethink this a bit...

All kidding aside, I can see this as as one of those absolute perfect things. No hot spots or un-even anything. Kind of a companion to heat treat salt baths.

A toaster oven works fine, a toaster oven with a little mass it, like a small piece of plate steel works even better.

I had a pid ( really simple to hook up Ron, diagram on side of unit, comes as a kit (pid, relay, thermocouple, heat sink) on ebay) fry daddy, and some free time on hand. It is not a leaps and bounds improvement over the toaster oven, it is just a tightening up of my heat treating process.

That should work VERY well.......as long as you don't burn your shop/house down. But in all seriousness, at 450F, you are right at the smoke point for peanut oil. Safflower oil has smoke point of 510F. Are you concerned about the durability of the Fry Daddy parts? Those little devices typically don't run that hot.
