Thanked: 0Contact Wheel Size
I'm starting to make my first razor and had one quick question about contact wheel size. If I'm making an 7/8 - 8/8 razor, will an 8" wheel work for grinding the bevels? Or do I need a smaller wheel to hollow the grind out better?

Thanked: 1936Ron is right on the $. To make a quality razor, you need to understand a razor. Many good knife makers make razor shaped objects (RSO)because they dont understand the ergonomics, proper steel and HT, spine to width ratio, scales, pinning, honing and so on.
As makers, we have a "can do" attitude. Yes, if you are a maker, I have no doubt you can make a razor...as long as you learn more about them. Once you learn about razors, you will understand our passion for them and our desire to see anyone who has the desire to learn...to succeed.Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Thank you and God Bless, Scott

Thanked: 3228Even though Germans call straight razors "rasiermesser" or shaving knife they are not a knife in the sense a hunting knife is. Once you get that all else falls into place.

An 8" wheel will work for a heavy grind. If you want to hollow out the grind you will need smaller wheels.

You must also factor in the thickness of the stock.
There is a wheel diameter calculator, but it does not always open: http://bimjo.com/free/widget.htmlMy father was an engineer. He used to tell me that sharpening a straight razor is like trying to build a ladder to the moon out of a roll of aluminum foil.
