    Default What size Checkering File?

    Hi Guys,

I managed to source a relatively small checkering file, but it doesn't seem to be able to create deep jimps. Does anyone have a link to the type required for decent jimps? (Ebay or wherever).

    Many thanks

I have both size 0 & 00 checkering files, these are 1/2" wide by about 6" long and make about 1mm & 0.5mm spaced jimping
I got them through Gamco/Artisan supplies in Aus couple years ago
The jimping doesn't need to be deep as they are for additional grip with light pressure while shaving

I do jimp work with a jewelry saw for the bulk of it and then small files to widen out the grooves. But I've found jewelry saws to be good for getting nice deep grooves. If you go that route, get a blade with the most teeth per inch that you can so it'll work better on steel

I have used a thread file... 32 or 40 TPI. and they are available in Metric also. Thanks to an old timer that turned me on to them.

    Great advice guys,

I'll try all of these. I'm sure some methods work better depending on different blade shapes too.

Remember, you must cut jimps (with a file anyways) before heat treat.

    Thanks Scott,

Yes, I realised that when I tried to cut them into a blade blank that a Blacksmith made for me - I didn't know he'd also heat treated it too.
