Thanked: 172Ignorants
I guess I will show my ignorants here. Would like to try to make str8, but is there a steel blank or i've heard of some using files, that is already tempered so all that needs be done is to shape, scale, and sharpen? [ I know I made this sound very simplistic, understanding it's not], but what I guess I'm really asking is can it be done without forge and tempering?

Hi Paco, How was your trip?
As far as I know you need forging and tempering of the steel to produce a razor. Also, not every kind of steel can be used for this purpose. Perhaps some people have tried to make razors using files but I do not know how that works or who has done it here. However, I think that you may be referring to the Blade Blank Project:
custom ish blade blank project - Straight Razor Place Forums
The idea is to produce a blade blank that would be ready to go without much work from the user. Basically, as you say, scale (this is not required), hone and shave. All the forging, tempering and grinding has been done for you by Butch and his associates ;-). I was talking to Butch last night and he is in the grinding stage of a few of the blanks. I should probably let Butch take over from here on status ;-), and please Butch, correct me if I relayed the wrong information.

Thanked: 172Al raz ; The trip was good but did not find any of the Bay Rums. I was told that it wasn't made quite as much anymore. The only place i found any was at the drug store.
Seas were calm so no cuts. Will be going on another to Alaska in June. Thanks for the info on this post. I guess the pre tempered blanks are what I would be looking for, so if i could be kept informed about mabe getting some i would appreciate it.Consider where you will spend ETERNITY !!!!!!
