Default Saying hello too with my work

As MarkStephen i say hello with my work. I'm totaly new to the straight razor world and i 'm sure will ask here a lot of advice (after to have read a good part of the forum . I know already one or two guy here).

Two month ago, i have and idea, i'm bored by the 5 blade razor i used and i said in my head, why not to make a straight razor to shave me ?

The first test forged in a piece of 110wcrv5, hollow grind with the 300mm wheel 2mm thick to the back. It's too thin. It's inspired by the japanese fixes razor.

    Second and third test
The long one is in O2, oil hardening 3.5mm thick, it's a 3/8. Titanium handle. The two have been made in a morning, in order to be able to test them the afternoon . No completion at all. I shave me since 3 week with the long one
The small one is in O2, 1.6mm thick, more or less a 3/8 too. it's tooo thin.
First try with G10 handle toxified.

    The fourth prototype.
Always O2, 3.5 mm thick, with a deep hollow grind on a 100mm wheel. If the edge is not in the same way than the back that is because i have had some "problem" of pressure on the contact wheel and grind too much a point . I have had to make the edge higher than the first idea .
G10 handle. I find the way to make a simple G10 handle.

    The last one
EN9 mod (more or less xc75 or 1075), water hardening, 4.5mm to the handle, 3mm to the back of the blade.

I shave me with that one yesterday. Some more strope work and that will be cool.

All these are only prototype and test , straight razor is a world i don't know and i enjoy to test new thing

Awesome work cardoso! Wow that last razor looks like a butchers knife . Nice strop too, I think one of the most unique ones I've seen was made by an ozzy who used kangaroo hide. Now all you need is to forge a handle for your brush and you'll be set!

    keep up the great work

I like the way your razors look especially the last one. All of your work has a certain style, I like it. I have admired your knives that you have posted on the British Blades Forum. Welcome to Straight Razor Place. I look forward to seeing more of you designs.

    Quite remarkable...
"Bah! I'm bored with these multiblade razors... I'll make myself a razor."
Amazing. And they look good too... robust and rugged. No BS, just a razor. Fantastic.

Thank you very much for the welcome

mbwhoosh that is funny, that last one seem for me as a small heroic fantasy sword

I'm waiting for a custom stainless brush (but i won't forge it myself, that could be an idea

Thank you for enjoying my "style" and my underground work

fpessanha, thank you, i'm totaly new to the straight razor world (making and using) and try to make something efficient without any too much thing on it as on my knives. Something functionnal and simple.

    Welcome to the SRP!
The last one is very nice! The grinding is very clean.
As you have found out that a wide blade and a narrow spine result in a very wide bevel. The general rule of thumb is to have the width of the blade no more than 4 times the thickness of the spine.

    Examples....

width of blade = 25.4 mm
thickness of spine = 6.35 mm , minimum

width of blade = 19.05 mm
thickness of spine = 4.76 mm, minimum

This will give you a nice narrow bevel that is much easier to hone.

    I hope this helps,
Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin
