Thanked: 32Fixed Razor
EN9 (more or less a 1084), double total oil hardening
Flash tempering
2" sharp
7/8" to the point 8/8" to the heel. Hollow grind with a 300mm wheel, i stopped the grind to 0,15mm thick and i complete everything with japanese stone (800, 1000, 3000), chinese stone 12000 and leather strop.
Long 15,2 cm,
Thickness 4,5 cm
That is inspired by japanese razor, but i have a totally free interpretation

Very cool! Love the file work! It looks like it could be at home in the kitchen. I like that too! Have you honed it like a Japanese blade or western? Great work. Does it shave well?

Thanked: 32Thank you
Ben I honned that as western, on the two side of the grind, totaly flat. I don't know now if it's shave correctly, i will try tomorrow. I'm already shaved for today . But i'm almost sure i have some more honning work to do on that one
That is indeed the second razor that i make and seem to be a butcher knife

I like what you've done with that piece of steel. Very nice. I'm fine with a square point at the toe, but sharp heel spikes scare me.

Thanked: 2209Thats a good looking piece of steel. I see that you used a 11.8 inch diameter wheel. I wish I had one that large!
From the picture I see that the bevel is wide which makes it take more time to hone. In the future, if you wish a narrow bevel that is easier to hone the the blade width should be no more than 4 times the thickness of the spine.
So, if your spine thickness is 0.25 inches then the maximum width of the blade should be 1"
in millimeters
blade width = 25.4 mm
spine thickness = 25.4 / 4 = 6.35
If you measure a bunch of old vintage razors you will find that the ratio is 3.5:1 up to 4:1

Thanked: 32You're right the toe is too pointy, i will round it .
Thank you randydance. You wrote me that rules on the last post i did, i was after a piece of steel with 6mm thick, but that was only a file and i didn't have had the time to anneal it.
I took the thickest piece of steel i have.
I would enjoy to have a 7.8" wheel to make smaller grind and less thick razor.
With my 11.8 inch wheel your right, the grind is not enough deep on that thickness and the honing time is quitly long
Ugly piece of steel . That is exactly the word for défine my work
