Post Mini Forge - Single Burner Forced Air.

Hi guys havn't really seen much in here on forges, now i know nothing apart from reading and youtubing, but I came across these, and thought, I'd share. The plans are free, and all designs are done by Scott Beck (Custom Knives) he's also on youtube as YouTube - MrIronman1979's Channel

Seems, like a nice little unit, and works wonders, as per his youtube vids etc. but anyway here are the plans if anyone would like them, if they're pretty shitty via the forum, email me and I'll shoot them over.

Nice set of plans. Maybe Mike Blue will stop by and comment. The main thing that stands out to me is that the interior is square, which makes for a less-than-ideal airflow. You want the flame to create a vortex inside the forge, swirling it around and heating the interior more evenly. A forced air forge might work differently than a venturi forge, which is what I've worked with.

    Thanks for sharing!

The lining inside, is the shape of a cylinder, can't really see that on the plans, really noticeable on his youtube page

I didn't have time to watch the whole youtube vid yet, but does he coat the ceramic blanket with satinite to protect it from flux damage?

It might be round inside, but from the plans and the pictures the burner enters straight down. That will mean a hot spot on the floor of the forge. It don't think these units have a tangential flame.

That doesnt' mean they won't work, but there are some efficiencies that could be present if a few tweaks occurred.

Hey Chris, I couldn't tell you to behonest, i've only watched the vids, and he never mentioned anything in it. He emailed me the plans, upon request.

Mike I'd love to see any other plans out there, I'd really like to start looking towards building one etc :"D

The single best book I've ever read on building forges is by an author named Mike Porter:

Here's a link to it on Amazon (no partiality on my part, it was the the first thing that came up in Google):

It's absolutely worth every penny and instead being vague it's very explicit and walks you through the entire process. No welding required.

He also includes sections on a torch and a furnace.

Nothing wrong with a Fogg style heater. Some of those features are handy. I use a horizontal tube and venturi burners. No electricity involved.
