new small contact wheel
Here is a picture of my new 2" contact wheel. My old 2" wheel was solid aluminium. I wanted a softer wheel so I could get a better finish. I cut the skateboard wheel down with a bandsaw. Then with my minilathe I trued up the sides and outside diameter, then bored pockets for the bearings. The wheel is 70 durometer.
I just wanted to toss the idea of skateboard wheels out there for those who like to tinker.

Sweet Charlie,
Great idea. Now I can do the same with one of the wheels from my hand truck and make my own 10" contact wheel.
You're the man!

Thanked: 202Well done.
I have done something similar sometimes ago but with small difference. Firstly I did not turned it down on the lathe as the size was perfect for the grind I was repairing. Secondly it was being used in the batery power drill that I could control revs. And thirdly There were already bearing slots in but I had to jam the bearings to use it in the drill.
There are different sizes and materials in those wheels. I am trying to get some of those monster boards as they could accommodate 2" wide belt, I believe they have metal shasi, polyurethane outer of 82 hardness and use it as part of my belt grinder project.
