Thanked: 30Master grinding tips on a KMG
Does anyone have any tips on how to get a even master grind(from start to finish) on a straightrazor. There are lots of videos on this for knives but no straightrazors. The principal is different from what i have been told. I would like to achieve 1/4" grinds to 1/2" grinds on my KMG with my 8" and 6" wheels. But i need help
Thanks..

Seriously- practice. That's really the best advice and all I can really think of.

Bob Allman, has some great pictures of razor grinding on a KMG.
Straight Razor Place Forums - boballman's Album: The birth of a razor
He has the process down to an art.

When I grind I try to get a groove going toward the edge side and slowly work it down toward the spine. Then I establish the flats/or wedge shape then I grind some more to even out the edge and spine.

Jordan,
Alex has given you the best advise available. Practice, practice and keep practicing. After a few hundred regrinds you'll get the hang of it. Relying on and watching a video is not going to make you a better grinder. Sure, it can give you some indication what's involved but in the end you have to figure out for yourself what works best for you. Some like to stand grinding, others sit, grind freehand, with a work rest,...
It doesn't matter if it's a KMG, Bader, Burr King, Home made built,... they all use wheels, share the same principle and do the same, grind.

I have less experience than anyone in this thread, so bear that in mind...
Grinding isn't easy, and you're going to have to just start working at it, and figure out what works. Bob has his system down pat (literally with mathematical precision), but Alex freehands all his (from what I understand), and they both do good work. I sat in Bob's shop with him over my shoulder telling me exactly what to do, and I still screwed it up... It will just take work, and lots of it
