I agree with Butch maybee im missing out on something time will tell . The only thing I dont like about it is the Vfd will never last being below the grinding area the sparks /metal dust would be hard on it and I know that vfd is like 500 bucks cuzz I just bought one. Im thinking of putting mine on the wall in a covered box with ventilation to keep it from over heating . I love the bench idea being moveable .

You may consider using a bucket with water or a dust collection system under your wheel or platen when grinding. I have yet to see any sparks hit anything else. You did pay for a Nema 4 with your VFD. It provides a degree of protection especially as a dust proof enclosure.
As to the usefulness of a horizontal grinder. It just means you have not come to a few situations in your designs or grinding where you thought about different ways to perfect something and make your work flow easier. After all you are foremost a knife maker I presume and since I'm not into knife making at all it could well be that it has no use for it or very little. But it seems many knife makers do make use of it.

Max, could you throw some dirt on the floor and take some new pictures?
I'm having a hard time understanding that I'm looking at pictures of a shop.

I don't do any grinding, but the stand looks pretty cool. It looks like there's some kind of piston to offset the weight of the grinder when it rotates? Brilliant design.

    Default grinder

Max I have a King industrial dust collector with a 10 micron paper canister air filter. I keep it right beside my computer and is so good that I have never had to wipe any dust off my computer in over a year. Kellyw

It is indeed useful. Mine's a Delta with a 1 micron top filter bag and it sure does a great job. I also use it for other tools. Couldn't be without it.

Max sorry to dissagree but I had the same 1 micron bag and its crap . When I sanded wood or steel my computer was covered every day so bad I left the windex and paper towel on my desk and wiped it down daily. I have had phemonia 3 times once chemical and was bleeding in my lungs very bad . Most the woods and horn cause lung disease one type or another. I wear a full face 3m 6800 filter mask with an organic/carbon filter good for some gases and all dust. I run my dust collector with in 1 ft of my grinder and you can see the flow of dust as I sand. I will tell you this your lungs are a rare commodity spend the 250 dollars on the 10 micron canister and youll never look back .
