    I like this answer the best. But, the thoughts about some contaminant in the acetone have validity too. It sounds like your methods were sound (cleaning gloves etc.). These are the things that make the metal business interesting. Kinda like mental beef jerky.

    That is neat. The patterns make me wonder if what we see there are not part of age old fingerprints etched into the steel. Ever seen fingerprints etched into tools from certain peoples body chemistry attacking the metal? The carbides or contaminants theories are best though. Very cool though.
