Thanked: 1Proselytizing
This week at work one of my pupils came up to chat between classes, commenting at one point that he had managed to really burn his face while shaving that morning. I asked him what he used, he told me an M3, and I replied that this was the problem.
"What do you mean?" he said, looking puzzled.
"Think about it. You've got three blades, right? What does the first one do?"
"Cuts?"
"Yes, and what does it do to the cream on your face?"
"Um, scrapes it off?"
"Right. So the other two blades are dragging across bare skin. What do you think that does to your face?"
"Dude!" (visibly thinks about this for a moment) "Three blades for precision, my [eye]!"
He was afraid to try a straight, despite my reassurances, but I think I may have at least convinced him to switch to a DE. Get 'em while they're young, say I!

Well done. He's one of the smart ones then.

Try a slightly different form of persuasion. Try using the "I have stones the size of Montana because I go hardcore old-school and use a straight razor" tactic. That may get him to at least try one. There is somewhat of a testosterone-clouded mystique about using a big, bare blade on one's face and using it as an enticement on a potential convert is fair game, says I.

Thanked: 1I may do that, but I'd like to see if he's willing to make a switch first. Then I can lay on the "You know, for a real man's shave that will have the girls all over you..." :-)

Thanked: 1587I tried something similar with my brother in law once - told him how good the shaves were, the skill you develop etc, etc. Just to prove the point I went and had a shave, and gave myself the worst cut (behind the ear) I've ever had. Something about the blood dripping down my neck seemed to turn him off the idea for some reason.

The kid will probably be thinking about that all day. Then he'll find some dull straight, shave with it and cut his face up leaving permanent scars and the next thing you know you and the school will be faced with a multimillion dollar lawsuit. You know there are attorney's just waiting for something like that to fall into their laps!

Converting friends is great fun. So far I've converted my brother to DE shaving with a kit that included a Gillette Superspeed, blades, a Burma Shave brush and tube of Proraso cream. He's totally hooked.
He in turn told another of my friends about it, and I think he's going to get into it, too.
Tonight I gave yet another friend one of my kits, and he asked me to hone up a straight for him, too.
I have this crazy asperation to pay Gillette back for all those years of suffering they inflicted on me. I'd love to see traditional shaving cut into their profits, but I'm sure that's a long way off.
Won't stop me from trying, though.
