Default The Start of the end of Acquisition Disorder...

Over the last year or so I have just collected so much stuff, it's become more about collecting then shaving and I'm always thinking about what to use, what's the best and so on….. It's just not as relaxing or as simple as it once was…I started with a DE and a tube of Proraso green. I just consider most of it clutter now….

So I chopped my whole collection today..

Filled several boxes with the stuff thats going on ebay, scuttles, mugs, strops, DE's and straight razors vintage and new alike. I gifted all my the opened products to a friend I just introduced to wet shaving (he thought it was christmas, come early…lol…)

    What I decided to keep,

My favourite Whipped Dog Silvertip Badger brush and matching Mug from the Firehouse Potter

My fantastic Simpson Wee Badger (travel Brush)

Dovo 6/8 Bismarch (present from the wife)

    Gotta 6/8 120 (present from a friend)

    1 paddle strop / 1 12K barbers hone

Merkur Futur + 100 Personna Red Blades (the best DE money can buy bar none in IMHO)

All my soaps except my remaining Arko Sticks (the best ever soap made by the turkish god ARKO…lol)

All my creams except Proraso Green, TOBS sandalwood, Lemon & Lime, Grapefruit and Lavender and CRS Mint… (can't live without any of these at the moment….(from wakey wakey to sleepy sleepy and all in between ) Looks like i'm a TOBS fan after all...

    All my colognes and aftershaves except;

TOBS No 44 victorian lime cologne, TOBS Sandlewood cologne, Cussons original, Calvin Klien CK one EDT, and Natio Maximum EDT (I still have Pinaud Clubman Bay Rum, brut and Old spice and a couple more, but once its gone its gone).

All Balms / moisturisers etc, except Natio Moisturiser and Natio Razor Burn relief (used very occasionally but its the best)

For me the stuff listed above is the cream of the crop, the stuff I really do enjoy using. TBH I think it will get cut a little bit more when things run out, but for now I think I have been very brave…..

I'm actually feeling pretty good about the whole thing.

Anybody else taken drastic measures to control their Acquisition disorders????

I thought I felt a cosmic shift last night that left me uneasy and now I have the reason. Good on ya Kev hope you have no regrets down the road is all. You are right of course that having too much choice can make something simple too complicated.

Yep, I too felt a disturbance in the Force.

At the start of 2013 I counted and found that I had 143 razors and decided to cut back drastically. After agonizing over the choices for a few days I settled on keeping 30 of them and proceeded to give, sell, and trade the rest. I got it down to 32 by midsummer but then suffered an acute attack of "just one more".. now back up to 43 with number 44 on the way. I need to have another serious discussion with myself.

    So.. beware of back sliding!

I suffered the same phenomenon and did the same thing, I loaded up boxes of stuff to put on ebay. This was in 2002 or so. Moving twice since then I brought the boxes along for when I take the photos, write the descriptions, and list them on the bay .......... I'll get around to it one of theses days .......
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I'm at about 30 razor's, about 5 of them are brand new 4 TI's and one Dovo Bismarck, aside from those, my collection has been pretty much what I've been looking for, big W&B's and other Sheffield razors.

Now, I will only buy 8/8 or bigger, spike point/square tip, vintage Sheffield blades, preferably W&B's. Now, while there are lots of great blades out there that I like, I always ask myself will these be blades I will regularly use, or will it simply be a nice to have, use once or twice, and then filed away.

I had Filarmonica on my list, and managed to find two of those for an incredibly reasonable price, so now, aside from buying some blades to learn honing on the other day, I'll wait and patiently search, for only the one's I want. And haven't really seen any in a long time, and don't necessarily expect to!! They are hard to find - man I'd like more of those 9/8 W&B Celebrated, Hollow Ground, For Barbers Use, my dream would be to have a 7 Day set of them!

Have actually been thinking of selling my virtually brand new TI's! I like them, but maybe have used each one, 3 or 4 times, they're just not a go-to razor for me???

So yes, all the AD's have eased off, have the soaps, the strops, the hones, so I guess my RAD hasn't settled down, it's just become very specific.

    Cheers!

I understand your rationale. Over the last couple of years I have amassed quite a bit of stuff also and was going to put a bunch of razors up for sale also. I doubt I will get down as far as you did but I have more than I can use.

    State v. Durham, 323 N.W. 2d 243, 245 (Iowa 1982) (holding that a straight razor is per se a "dangerous weapon").

The only problem is you need to find the cure. Selling everything off will only make you want to buy even more down the road to replace what you sold.

Gentlemen I feel your pain and congatulate those that have made the decision to part with some shaving gear.
When you get the job done please post here about how good it feels to have corrected your "collection gone out of control".
I could use some encouragement to do the same.
