Another Newbie
Greetings,
My name is Ed and I just joined the group. Just starting with the straight razor, got everything I need, and am ready to go. Watched my Dad use a straight razor for years and was always fascinated by how good he was at it. I'm restoring 2 of his razors which I'll be using. Waiting on an ordered strop and hone. Here's hoping that I can do half as well as he did.
I'm sure I'll have lots of questions as I proceed to learn this skill. Now I have a place to get the answers.
See ya,
Ed

Welcome aboard Ed. You're another person who lucked out and got a piece of family history. I wish I had my great-gramps' straight. Make sure you check out the restoration forum for lots of interesting restoration tips. Use the search function, it can help cut through the white noise. Our help files section contains a great tutorial on making scales. Feel free to ask any questions that come to mind.

Dad's Razors
Hi Guy's,
Thanks for the warm welcome.
One of the razors I'll be restoring is named "The Palmer" and was made in Chicago. The Other has no identifying marks. I'll post pics of both when I get time. I also have what looks and feels like an Arkansas stone. It's white, and measures 2"x8"x3/4". The brand name(engraved on the bottom side of the stone) is "Thomas" and it has PL-13 below the brand name. Ultra smooth, like something you would use just prior to the strop. I don't remember seeing my Dad use it. It was in the box with the razors and a couple of fine India oil stones
See ya

Welcome aboard Ed. The razors could be German or even U.S. Check the tang to see wgere they are made. I wouldn't rush to use that stone. Most here use a Norton 4K/8K combo as the basic stone. Good luck and take it slow and easy.
