I was skeptical about a straight razor's use as a weapon until I heard it being described, as you have. Place the scales across the palm, fold fingers over the scales and then fold the razor until the spine rests against the knuckles. Even deflected, blocked out outright misses would inflict some critical injuries - nasty way to go.
