"Olde Time Barber shop"
In my search for vintage razor gear I came across a local barber shop here in town. I drive past this place every single day going to work an never new it was truly what its name implied. I stopped in a few days ago an spent a good bit of time talking with one of the veteran barbers (owner). This place is like walking into a time machine. They offer everything from cuts to shaves to sitting around watching ball games an just hanging out. After talking with eric he was glad to hear of my interest in straights an wet shaving. He showed me some of his gear including his red imp that is his go to straight. So all this being said I am contemplating making an appt. to get my first barber straight shave. I have to say it makes me nervous a bit to let someone else shave me. So to all the barbers on here do you have any advice for a first time customer? If interested here is the website. Thanks for letting me ramble. Just think this place has a major cool factor.

Thanked: 3795I'm not a barber but I suggest that you tip well if you intend to be a second time customer! I would assume that you need no advice. It sounds like this is an experienced barber so you should just put yourself in his hands and let him control the shave. He'll be able to tell you whatever you need to do.

Go for it!
There is an 80 year old Italian guy, career barber I found just round the corner from me who works from a small room on the side of his house.
Fantastic to experience the skill of someone who has done it for a long time and knows how to Weald a razor like that.
Being in the learning stages of straight shaving it was great to see/feel the results of how smooth and good such a shave can be. Also gave me a bench mark to work to and a reference of how a straight should shave, prep, drag, angles, pressure.
I will be returning for more in the future.
I hope you have the same enjoyable experience.

What a great shop. I just wish it weren't such a long drive from Portland, Oregon.

Just kick back and relax, as a barber I can say he will ask you if he needs you to do anything

On the other hand I find it odd a barber uses a shave brush and mug....is he applying it to the face with it? Even in the old days it was deemed unsanitary to use the same brush on multiple customers...hence the racks full of mugs on shop walls you'll see in vintage pictures...each customer had their own.
