I want to play a game.



I'm a horrible minimalist. Name a shave related Acquisition Disorder and I'm afflicted. So as I sat reading posts from others who have more success in controlling their urges, I wondered, just how cheap of a great shave could I get with gear from my rotation? Here's what I came up with:

Razor: Case Red Imp 132 I paid $4 for. Basketcase. Needed a lot of TLC to get it into shape, but she's a fine razor now. I had to re-scale it, and did so with a piece of red acrylic which was $5. So $9 for the razor.

Brush: Omega 10049 $7.99

Soap: Willams puck (from the Dollar Store) $1.00

Aftershave: Thayers Aftershave with witch hazel and aloe $6.25

TOTAL COST OF SHAVE: $24.24 (NOTE: I didn't include tax or shipping on any of this, so you don't have to either.)

So, how the game is played: You must use a razor, a brush, a soap/cream, and an aftershave care product. If your razor was a gift, that's fair game. If cold water is your aftershave, that's fair game because you deserve it you masochist . But the items MUST be in regular use in your rotation.

So how low can you go? GAME ON!

Ivory soap, $8.00 for a pack of ten but I usually just take the dregs, (the left over little pieces that no one uses but get left in the shower floor for two weeks) so that would be $0.00 in my book. Charter Oak SR antique store find in pitiful shape, owner threw it in for free with my other purchases: so $0.00. After shave well now I have had this bottle of Old spice for the last 10 years and it is still half full and I don't remember what I paid for it, let's say $5.00. So I would say that my total is $5.00

I was at Hialeah racetrack in the 1970s. I was reading the racing form trying to handicap winners. Sitting across from the betting windows. A guy came up to me, sat down and said, "Who do you like ?" I told him I was betting $2.00 on this one, two dollars and that one ........... "Two dollars !", he said, "I never bet less than $100.00," and he walked away shaking his head. So, point is, I'm not shaking my head, if you can shave and save $ more power to you, but I'm like that guy at the $100 window.

I told you, I'm a cheap bastard. To be fair, I sometimes use my Parker badger brush I paid $30.00 for but my bowl is one my son made me in 5th grade as an ash tray for fathers day many years ago. Funny thing is that I didn't smoke back then.

I used to moonlight at a harness racing track called Scarborough Downs in South Portland, Maine when I was in the Navy. Blazer and tie armed guard/courier. My job was to hit all of the parimutuel windows (3 banks of about 20 windows each) and collect the cash after each race to take up to an accounting office. It took about 8 girls to count up that money steadily from open to after close, so the track owner was raking it in.

Anyway, I began to develop the ability to read a race program. In time after working there long enough and starting to recognize the horses, stables, trainers, trotters, pacers, how they ran on certain track conditions, etc, It was a bad day at the track if I couldn't triple the money in my wallet by the time the work day was over . Never going crazy, mostly quins and exactas. Buy a ten dollar ticket, win fifteen bucks. If one is inclined to play the ponies, the importance of being able to interpret a race program and handicap a horse can not be overstated.
