    Default Gift for Grandpa story

I just remembered this so wanted to share it. When I was a kid, I only knew one of my grandfathers, the other one had died (he was a straight razor guy).

The one I knew was my favorite person in the whole family. (By the way, he had the same name as Ilija

He was a DE user; he was using some cheapo commie cream, a plain brush, and a simple DE. He used one pack of blades / year or so, sharpened them himself on what must have been a coarse knife hone, and after years on the front and at sea he wasn't too keen to shave (go figure ). My Grandma was always making him shave though, and he grumblingly conceded. He almost never cut himself, and I don't remember seeing any razor burn.

So, still under Communism, I managed to get my hands on Gilette Shave foam of some sort in a snazzy package and all. Imagine my excitement - it looked so nice, so superior to the sorry tube of cream my grandfather used. Wasn't cheap either for the country's standards... actually - it was ridiculously expensive - like a lavish dinner for a big group in one of the better restaurants. So I got it for him and didn't even tell him how much it was...

He used it only several times. I asked him a couple of times why he doesn't use it and he always told me he was saving it for very special occasions. My appeals to use it, telling him I'll get him another one when it's over didn't help. It sat there for years. He continued to use his usual cream. Name was Karo, and it may have been stolen from Arko (ot the other way around, who knows)

Later my Grandmother told me that the Gillete foam wasn't any good, according to him. He didn't have the heart to tell me it sucked too bad for use

Now I understand a bit better

    Cheers
    Ivo

    Great story.
Your Grandfather sounds like he was a nice guy.
I knew neither of my grandfathers really well. Both died when I was between 3 and 5 years old.

I still think it would have been great to have talked with them about when they were young...

    Such is life...
Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I never got to talk to mine either. My dad was an orphan, my mothers father was a railroader and died in an accident, Always wish I could have though.
