How Low Can You Go...?

I'm a horrible minimalist. Name a shave related Acquisition Disorder and I'm afflicted. So as I sat reading posts from others who have more success in controlling their urges, I wondered, just how cheap of a great shave could I get with gear from my rotation? Here's what I came up with:

Razor: Case Red Imp 132 I paid $4 for. Basketcase. Needed a lot of TLC to get it into shape, but she's a fine razor now. I had to re-scale it, and did so with a piece of red acrylic which was $5. So $9 for the razor.

Brush: Omega 10049 $7.99

Soap: Willams puck (from the Dollar Store) $1.00

Aftershave: Thayers Aftershave with witch hazel and aloe $6.25

TOTAL COST OF SHAVE: $24.24 (NOTE: I didn't include tax or shipping on any of this, so you don't have to either.)

So, how the game is played: You must use a razor, a brush, a soap/cream, and an aftershave care product. If your razor was a gift, that's fair game. If cold water is your aftershave, that's fair game because you deserve it you masochist :D. But the items MUST be in regular use in your rotation.

So how low can you go? GAME ON!

I'm glad to know that I am not the only CB here. Sounds like a good game. lets see... Ivory soap, $8.00 for a pack of ten but I usually just take the dregs, (the left over little pieces that no one uses but get left in the shower floor for two weeks) so that would be $0.00 in my book. Charter Oak SR antique store find in pitiful shape, owner threw it in for free with my other purchases: so $0.00. After shave well now I have had this bottle of Old spice for the last 10 years and it is still half full and I don't remember what I paid for it, let's say $5.00. So I would say that my total is $5.00

I am going to have to go over to some guys house, hold him at gun point, use his stuff and then walk out with it to beat you guys :<0)

I was at Hialeah racetrack in the 1970s. I was reading the racing form trying to handicap winners. Sitting across from the betting windows. A guy came up to me, sat down and said, "Who do you like ?" I told him I was betting $2.00 on this one, two dollars and that one ........... "Two dollars !", he said, "I never bet less than $100.00," and he walked away shaking his head. So, point is, I'm not shaking my head, if you can shave and save $ more power to you, but I'm like that guy at the $100 window. :shrug:

I told you, I'm a cheap bastard. To be fair, I sometimes use my Parker badger brush I paid $30.00 for but my bowl is one my son made me in 5th grade as an ash tray for fathers day many years ago. Funny thing is that I didn't smoke back then.

I used to moonlight at a harness racing track called Scarborough Downs in South Portland, Maine when I was in the Navy. Blazer and tie armed guard/courier. My job was to hit all of the parimutuel windows (3 banks of about 20 windows each) and collect the cash after each race to take up to an accounting office. It took about 8 girls to count up that money steadily from open to after close, so the track owner was raking it in.

Anyway, I began to develop the ability to read a race program. In time after working there long enough and starting to recognize the horses, stables, trainers, trotters, pacers, how they ran on certain track conditions, etc, It was a bad day at the track if I couldn't triple the money in my wallet by the time the work day was over :D. Never going crazy, mostly quins and exactas. Buy a ten dollar ticket, win fifteen bucks. If one is inclined to play the ponies, the importance of being able to interpret a race program and handicap a horse can not be overstated.

Cheapest I can go. This should be tough. Definitely more than $5.

I've got everyone beat. $0.00. How?, you say. Well I won the monthly give away so razor soap and aftershave where in it so free. Then I inherited a brush and strop from my grandfather. If I really wanted to put a price on something to boost this up maybe my vintage natural combo coticule. It was 5 dollars at an antique store and I inherited a 1k diamond stone from my dad so....

Oh and the razor is my favorite razor and same with the aftershave. The soap is good but running low so maybe I will add some dovo soap slivers. The brush is a favorite and the strop is good and I do use it but probably shouldnt. It's falling apart. And the coti plays a crucial role in my honing. Now my other razors that I have spent money on besides my new dove my most expensive one is a dubl duck satin edge. Which was 25 dollars from the same place the coti came from. It is in good shape though the scales need replacing to prevent cell rot.

My question is why should I shave on the cheap? What's the fun in that? I could drive around in a Yugo but I don't, I could go running in slippers but I don't, I could go mountain biking with a 3 speed bike but I don't, and I could eat macaroni and cheese for dinner every day but I don't. None of that is fun.

But for the ultimate shaving on the cheap I'll relate a story told to me by my dad many years ago.

A friend of his was in Marine Boot camp during WWll and they were all told the first day since they are all men and will be Marines they will shave every day period. Two dudes didn't think they needed to. The following day their DI marched them out to the garbage dump and retrieved for both of them two totally corroded DE razors with blades to match. He marched them back to the barracks and made them shave in front of the entire group with these razors and made them keep shaving until the DI was satisfied. That was with no prep, no water, no soap, nothing. After they were done and their faces were all cut up and scared for life the DI poured Alcohol all over their faces while they were doing pushups.

So, when you say shave on the cheap....

To that I say the opposite. Why spend so much. I could spend 200 on a dubl duck but I don't I spend an eighth of that for the same reason I could spend 100 to 200 on a natural combo coti but I don't I spend 5 dollars on it. I could spend 60 to hundred on a strop but why not just make one and have some pride in it too. Why not just make your own soap, which I do, and get the exact scent I want and exact ingredients I want for a lot less then spending a lot of money on a fancy named soap that kinda smells like I want and kinda lathers like I want.

I gave up on the 27 cent shave 46 years ago. I'll stick with Revisors and Castle Forbes. :chapeau

Arko soap $2.80 50 shaves out of a stick easy. 5 cents a shave
Turkish horsehair brush $4.00 probably used 100 times plus. 4 cents a shave
Vintage koken strop $40 stropped with it 200 times maybe. 20 cents a shave

Total including all the other razors, brushes, soaps etc etc that I didn't actually need, just wanted? Priceless.

Since Mike did not specify straight or DE, my cheapest shave would be $0.12 for a DE blade. Won the DE from a contest here, brush was a gift, free soap sample, mug was made by a friend. But I prefer to indulge in my Various AD's and don't concern myself with overall cost. :)

Well, I thought when I grabbed my $20 Wosty that I got off the SRP classifieds, my $24 pure badger Vulfix, a $4.29 puck of Momma Bears and a splash of Clubman that I was going cheap. After reading this thread it makes me feel that I am living extravagantly.

Just an exercise to get an A1 shave with inexpensive gear. Not a "cheapest shave" thread per se, but a good, enjoyable shave with your least expensive gear. I fear if I'd said "most expensive shave" the thread would have turned into a male reproductive organ waving contest :).

Old Breed Marines are thoroughly hardcore. I've had 80 year old (ex) Marines threaten to whoop the life out of me for making good-natured but less than charitable remarks about the Marine Corps ("sea going bell hops" and the like). Inter-service rivalries die hard, Army and Navy guy here.

BTW- Nothing but love and respect for the Marine Corps.

Now, the Air Force...;)
