Thanked: 1What is the "notch or "clip" for on Old Style Razors????
What is the "notch or "clip" for on Old Style Razors????
I've always wanted to know what is the notch or clipped part on the end of some of those larger old style "meat chopper" syle razors?
I remember when I was a kid asking a barber what it was for and he replied....
"Oh that's to allow the blood to drain...."
May we all be blessed with smoothe, close, cool, nickless shaves!
All the best,

Thanked: 346It allowed the razor to be used for trimming the hairs inside of the nose or ear. The small blades (2-4/8) can get inside there without the notch.

Thanked: 1A Jewish friend told me (obviously in jest...) said that's the part that's used to line it up when the Rabbi "trims" yah!
Maybe we should have a contest for the best "usage" for the "notch"!!!

I don't think anyone really knows for sure. We can all guess and maybe we should have a contest and whoever comes up with the best use for the notch wins a prize or somerthing.

I've heard this explanation too, but I'm sorry, I have a real hard time imagining cramming the bottom half of that razor up my nose, much less in my ear! (especially after Lynn honed it!)
N-o-o-o-o-o....I don't think so!
I've also heard, as have we all, that it was a notch so the barber could open the blade with one hand (although why he couldn't press on the tang with is thumb is beyond me), or that it was for marking moles in the lather (the barber would hold the end of the blade against the shavee's face, with the mole in the notch, and twist the blade 180 degrees, thereby cleaning off the cream from around the mole so the barber can see it and not cut it off - IMHO this one is a REAL stretch) - no, based on all of the possible reasons I've read on the forums, I'm going to have to go with Josh - it's just plain old-timey sexy-cool!

Lou, I'm with you ---- I don't think I'm sticking that thing in my nose or ear.
