Thanked: 369Thumb Pad and Thumb Nail Tests video
Ok, I've intended to do this for some time especially since some members have requested it. So I finally got it done.
Here are both the thumb pad test and the thumb nail test as I do them, and, as I understand to be the correct way to do them based on my studies from barber manuals, observation of barbers, and years of trial.
I wish that these could be uploaded directly to SRP so as not to have to display them publicly, but, as it is, I have to put them up on Google first. Thus the disclaimer. Anyway, here it is:

Please be advised that I've added no instruction to the video. If you have any questions, especially the noobies, I'll be more than happy to answer any forthcoming.

Good job! I've got some good descriptions in my recent blog that should compliment this thread nicely.

thanks for posting this video, Scott.
I do the thumbnail test the same way.
I do the thumbpad test similar except I add a little lateral "nudge" as you described in a previous posting. You might have done that in the video and I can't see it, though.

Steve,
Actually, no. I'm not using any lateral motion at all. Yes, I did post info regarding the thumb test with lateral nudge after talking to a barber, but I was previously doing the test without lateral motion, and still do.
My feeling is that a slight lateral nudge adds "noise" and obliterates some of the keen sensation I'm checking for. I can detect keeness better with a purely parallel motion along the blade. But if adding that nudge helps you (or anyone else), and you feel more confident doing it that way, go for it.

very informative! everything I have read lead me to think the thumbpad test was the same as the thumbnail test, running the blade along the thumb...this has discouraged me from attempting it; however, I think now i may give it a shot.
Thanks, great clip!
