There are some deals on the old Naniwa Super Stones out there. Just replaced my hones with the old Naniwa Super Stones. These were without bases and were 2cm/0.78in thick. The 1K stone cost me the equivalent of about $48 US plus shipping. Had the old Naniwa Super Stones before with bases and liked how they performed so did not bother to go with the "new improved" version.

I know I've asked and you've answered before about how thin you wear the stones, but when you decide to reach for a new stone, has the old one broken, or become thin enough that flexing is a problem, or other?

Those are pretty close in price to the Canadian retailer I bought from. Thanks, now I have another option when I need it again.

For me, it's not about flexing at all. It is about comfort in use. When they get so thin, so that to me, I can't comfortably push and pull without feeling like I am going to run my razor into the stand (whatever one I may be using), I will go to a new stone.

The one reason I wanted the stone on the base was the base. I got to looking at my Suehiro 20K and ck the measurements of the new stone with that of my 3/8K naniwa and found that with just a small amount of adjusting that both the 3/8 and the new 5K would fit in the base that came with the Suehiro 20. The base to the 20K raise my hand up just enough to keep me from hitting my knuckles when I hone so all that being said looks like I have a new stone on the way to play with and with the extra benefit of being able to use the 3/8 better. Who knew.

I received my 5K and have been waiting to use it. Well I got that chance a couple of days ago. I used the base of the 20K and it raised it up to just the right height and it did a beautiful job on one of the blades I won off the bay. to say the least with the razor coming off the bay it was as blunt as a butter knife. I set the bevel with the 1K moved on the 3K for the first set of 40 cycles then the Xstrokes moved to the 5K . Don't remember what the preferred no. of cycles are but did 40 light then the 40X strokes. finished with the 8-12and 20K as always . this worked great. I should have gotten the 5K long before now. Using the 3K worked ok but this seems to be working better. Like most folks I'm chasing that elusive perfect edge.
