Barber College
So my step son REALY wants to go to barber college but I am having trouble finding a good one where we live. He wants to learn the old school stuff and not have to go thru all of the "girly crap", his words. Anyone got any ideas? We live in Salem Oregon, he heard of one in Albany but from what I hear it sucks, lol.
Thanks guys in advance.
P.S. I just made him a deal that if he goes and graduates I will buy him a personal SR and a shavette for work. It's a beautiful day somewhere I hope!

He might have to go out of state to find an "old time" school. Post a thread asking if any of the members that are barbers could recommend a school that is following traditional methods. Or are they, or can they, take on apprentices, like in the old days.

Thanked: 31All states (to the best of my knowledge) license barbers. It is best if he can attend a barber school in the state he wants to live and work because the schools teach according to the testing requirements of their state. Schools that teach strictly barbering are becoming rare, not enough students to keep a school profitable. As far as the "girly stuff" goes, most of what a barber or cosmetologist learns comes after school and licensing. Depending on the details of the skill set (knowledge) he is after, he'll have to find a barbershop that takes graduating students. Those shops are getting fewer and fewer, but do exist. What he thinks he wants now will change quite a bit between the start of school and the first few years of practice. Most "barbers" present day, complete a cosmetology program because cosmetology schools are easier to find closer to home and the graduating student has more options in the salon industry.

Ozarkedger, well said. Barbering for the men only is becoming rare and rare these days.
Hoop, it just occured to me that there is a barber shop, downtown Portland. They do the full works from what I understand. Might be a good place to find out what you need from them."The sharpening stones from time to time provide officers with gasoline."

I doubt you will find a barbering college in the U.S that really teaches classic skills like straight shaving. A few may pay lip service to it and that's it. Most of these shops that offer straight shaves have barbers that are self taught in those areas.

I think barbering/styling is a great profession. One retail chain I know asks for razor skills. Just happened to stumble on this a day or two back - Careers

i know there is a couple close to me that are actual "Barber School" ( Akron , Canton OH ) another thing i thought was interesting was there is a Paul Mitchell beauty academy about 2 minutes from me , one of there lessons is "straight razor shaving " !! a friend of mine went and was telling me they practiced shaving off of balloons , there are also a few places around Cleveland , OH where woman have started barber shops where they offer straight razor shaves for $40 with a haircut , hot towel and hot lather treatment , but from there adds and write ups i think there getting there prices for the scenery , but i imagine it was something they were taught in a course and then capitalized on
