Thread: Barber College

So my step son REALY wants to go to barber college but I am having trouble finding a good one where we live. He wants to learn the old school stuff and not have to go thru all of the "girly crap", his words. Anyone got any ideas? We live in Salem Oregon, he heard of one in Albany but from what I hear it sucks, lol.

P.S. I just made him a deal that if he goes and graduates I will buy him a personal SR and a shavette for work.

He might have to go out of state to find an "old time" school. Post a thread asking if any of the members that are barbers could recommend a school that is following traditional methods. Or are they, or can they, take on apprentices, like in the old days.

All states (to the best of my knowledge) license barbers. It is best if he can attend a barber school in the state he wants to live and work because the schools teach according to the testing requirements of their state. Schools that teach strictly barbering are becoming rare, not enough students to keep a school profitable. As far as the "girly stuff" goes, most of what a barber or cosmetologist learns comes after school and licensing. Depending on the details of the skill set (knowledge) he is after, he'll have to find a barbershop that takes graduating students. Those shops are getting fewer and fewer, but do exist. What he thinks he wants now will change quite a bit between the start of school and the first few years of practice. Most "barbers" present day, complete a cosmetology program because cosmetology schools are easier to find closer to home and the graduating student has more options in the salon industry.

Hoop, it just occured to me that there is a barber shop, downtown Portland. They do the full works from what I understand. Might be a good place to find out what you need from them.

First I would like to thank both of you very much. Ozark that is something I had not thought of, but should have my wife is a nurse for god sake. Razorfeld thanks as always you are a wealth of knowledge. I am going to do some looking and see if I can find the place you are talking about but if you come across the name please let me know.
