new toys new challenges
YEah!!! This week I've got all my honing stuff in. A pasted paddle strop from Tony Miller and both a 1k/4k Norton and 4k/8k Norton (with a lapping stone) from Jim at Vintage.
So The first thing I do is grab a few razors that I had shave ready, but messed up on the strop when I was a newer Noob (now I'm super Noob!!!) and refesh them on the paddle. Much better shave. Thank you Tony for yet another quality product.
Then of course I grabbed one of the polish razors...still need more honing practice, that's all I'm going to say.
As a side note (this one is for you Xman and LX_Emergency) I got my first razor kiss while doing the coup de matre.

Sorry to hear buddy. Personally I don't really shave my upper lip that way I just wanted to show how people do it. Maybe I'll make a shaving video one day...if I can get my wife crazy enough to film for me that is.

it happens. I was laughing right after. I would love to see your shaving video. I've singled out you and X becasuse I noticed in the your pictures that you both have nice clean upper lips, like what I am aiming for. So I wanted to follow what you do

ST happens. Go easy on yourself and things should get better, especially with a truly sharp blade. Take your time and breath and all that stuff. Ever heard of Creative Visualisation?

Yes X, I've heard of it. Use it all the time when practicing my fly cast, flair bartending, and shaving. I'm big on learning, so I ran into that concept years ago. Always a good reminder though .
I'm not upset with myself in the least. It was merely a reminder from the razor for a bit of respect.
I just thought I'd share that I got my first (and last) *knocking on wood* "coup de matre" kiss from my razors. Mostly because I asked you both to explain it to me. You guys are awesome

I don't know if it is the best way but here goes. After I finish my first passes with the grain on my face I relather and shave again against the grain leaving the upper lip for last. I then hold my upper lip between my teeth lightly to keep it tight. I then take the blade (just the blade not the scales) with both hands - one on each end of the blade and slowly make upstrokes all along the upper lip until done. I have found this works for me, remember go easy and keep the 30 degree angle and it will work just fine.
I had to find someway to do it as it was the one place I wasn't getting a great shave and my wife really doesn't like facial hair on me. Hope this works for you too.
PS it only works if you shave commando though..Last edited by RichZ; 04-23-2007 at 05:38 PM.

Thanked: 2I find the bottom lip is the problem for me, I have stiff bristles that grow under the overhang of my lip and as it has a 2 deep skin grooves I've nicked myself a couple of times there.
