Clubs vs. Get Togethers
I have read a few post where meetings and places to hold them require insurance???? I am confused here a bit and wondered for those who meet up and have been do you have an official club where dues are collected and a formation of a board to oversee club activities?
I would think a get together at a restaurant if you have someone like the owner who is okay with a meet of folks would care less as long as you are eating and spending some money with them. But I assume when I read these events or meets needing insurance are for shows I assume???? Then if so what do like a hotel with a large banquet hall require as insurance and if vendors are coming in who pays for insurance? Is it a per event policy you buy or a year round policy one holds???
I years ago had founded a airgun club and had to purchase a policy for sportsman purposes to cover us for liability if someone was to accidently shoot themself or another member accidently or I guess purposely and for our owner of the land we shot at. I can understand it. Just wondered when I see get togethers being organized I see that insurance coverage word come up. It has to be for organized events where vendors come in and such.
Just curious to this hobby and how the different aspects work.German blade snob!

I organized a meet-up last September in a restaurant and had no issues. We are not an official club, just a group of people getting together. In this case the restaurant has liability insurance that covers guests. The same would be true if you held a meet at your house. If someone hurt themselves there they could hold the home owner liable.
I think if you move to a more formal mode of operation, either a club that is run as a business (profit or non profit) or a business putting on a convention/trade show you will have to look into some kind of liability insurance. Getting liability insurance for a two day show shouldn't be to bad, but I have no idea what kind of insurance a "club" would require.
I would be curious to hear other people thoughts about this as well.

im sure that if there was a "club" there maybe some forms or literature in your application freeing the club or place of meeting from liability ..
there is a knife club by me that I was thinking of joining where anyone who loves anything with a edge on it is welcome !! I know it is $15 a yr , they meet at a town hall once a month , and have a different theme every meeting as far as certain types of knives or manufacturers , and a buy, sell, trade before meetings and a annual show held at a small convention center ..
im sure with such organization they would have something in there membership with a clause !!
as far as a meet up would go I have saw groups get together in the corners of denny's or perkin's and am sure with permission from a manager you could probably get away with having a pre-arranged meet up if management ok's it and be covered by the restaurants policy but who knows

I am not aware of any formal clubs out there straight razor wise. They are all informal meetings and the place of meeting's insurance would cover any eventualities. As has been said if the meeting is in your residence your insurance would cover it.

I have had several meets here with sharp objects and no liability insurance whatsoever. I do suppose some sort of liability waiver would be a good idea at meets, though.

I rest my case.

Thanked: 3795I know it is a modern reality, but I hate the thought of anyone making a claim against someone for hurting themselves when knowingly choosing to handle straight razors.
