Thanked: 1Old article
Stumbled across this old article. It's rather dated and I find it rather odd that the author was insistent that the only way to shave is ATG.

Used razors and strops were a lot cheaper in 1972

Thanked: 1184Good old Mother Earth News. I used to have a subscription to it. If I only knew then , what I know know :<0)

Thanked: 4826I didn't have enough money for a subscription but one of my neighbor used to drop off her issues after she had read them and made any notes she wanted. There was also Harrowsmith magazine that was dropped off by another neighbor. He also seems to promote the "mentor" to show him the ropes

Haven't read the article. But I just want to say that the only areas I shave ATG are at the base of my neck and the skin beneath the jawline (drawn up, so as to use the jawbone as support). So a complete ATG shave with a straight is not necessary from my experience. And, oh yeah, I have a very thick, stubborn beard like everyone else.

I wondered about the author's flat declaration (based on his experience) that a WTG pass won't cut hair. Edge not sharp?

Interesting read. As was said in the last paragraph of the article, my daughter just upgraded a bathroom in her house and they pulled out a ton of old razor blades from the wall that had been pushed through the razor slot in the medicine cabinet.

I trust Mother Earth News more for composting advice than how to shave with a straight razor - terrible DIY advice from a guy who literally hung a safety razor in his face.
Now, from 1906 not-bestseller, "Shaving Made Easy"? Mostly good advice.

I couldn't read past where he says stainless razors are junk.

Thanked: 154Back in 1972 stainless steel for blades generally wasn't very good, so the writer's opinion makes more sense than it would today.
