Razor Collections for Posterity
I'm watching a German film that takes place in the near future and this idea pops up. It is probably not practical (meaning no money in it), but I can't contain the wish. This is for a younger man to pursue or for anyone to read and know the sentiment.... I hope.
Among the members here there must be thousands of razors in private collections. Most of them are probably not available for public viewing. This is reality. Someone could set up a traveling studio (for uniformity) and make a photographic record, arranged by date, country of manufacture, any criteria deemed important by those who know way more than I do about this fascinating activity. I know the SRP has a database and it is a valuable resource but I would like to see a 'coffee table' book form whether digital or on paper like the olden days. Ok it is out of my head....thanks for listening."Call me Ishmael"

Actually, as I recall, Zak (Voidmonster) was doing just that on Sheffield razors and tang stamps. I have not heard how it is going for a while.
As someone begins something like that, life tends to get in the way. Lots of razors. Lots of work!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

I really need to spend a rainy day going over it. Just went there for a bit and learned a lot about Marsden.
Interestingly, I am working on a Marsden now!Last edited by sharptonn; 07-19-2015 at 01:35 AM.

Indeed, it seems he had a stint of health issues and I know he had to move and set up a household/shop.
If we read on the site, Zak thanks Neil and Martin who helped contribute to some things there.
The quality of the pictures, research, and text is outstanding on what has been done thus far and I commend he efforts.
I hope I can help in the future as well with my limited capabilities.
This represents dedication and much hard work and, as-noted, is not profitable.
Just done for the love of history (and razors, of course)!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."

Indeed, life has very much been in the way of me updating the site. Plus, the two articles I've been working on to put up there are huge, multi-piece affairs for Robert Wade and William Wallace Gilchrist. The research alone on those two is taking a long time.
Mostly though, it's the life thing. My wife and I lived for 17 years in Oceanside California, and we've now moved up to the Bay Area (drove up Friday night, in fact), and prepping and selling our condo has been an enormous time sink.
I'm going to have some full-on empty time coming in the next couple weeks and I'll try and get some more entries put up. I also need to rebuild my photo rig, having decided the old one was too crappy to bother moving.
It was actually ScienceGuy who was archiving all the tang stamps on his site, Acier Fondu.
Thank you, everyone, for the kind words!
The history of these tools is one of my great passions, and I constantly tell people about this stuff. I want as much recorded and available as possible!-Zak Jarvis. Writer. Artist. Bon vivant.

Thanks for coming in, Zak! Hats off to what has been done so far! Looking forward to more.
Also the link to ScienceGuy's site should be explored! Thanks for posting the link

I travelled to California with $80.00 in my pocket in 1967. Oddly the second town I stayed in was Oceanside, couple of weeks. Then up the coast to San Francisco where I lived for 9 years before moving to Chico, CA to raise a couple of chillen. I was there for 10 years. Moving is very difficult, one of the big 3: Moving, Marriage, and Death. They all have a similarity . Good luck on your relocation. I have very fond memories of the Bay Area and a few nightmarish ones, like the Christmas I spent in a bare room with a paranoid Navaho, a moron that surprisingly passed as a Jesus figure, and a flamboyant homosexual. The thing that pulled us together was a spoonful, but that is another thread for another Forum. Again, moving is difficult, readying a dwelling for sale is hellish if you have been there for awhile. The filth kind of creeps in from the edges over time (my experience). Anyway, again, Good Luck to Zak, one of the Forums founts of knowledge. Right, fount...preferred by the readers of the OED even though font is now widely accepted.
