Default How easy it is to forget...

Just how sharp these things really are

I've been at the straight lark for 5 months and was beginning to feel really comfortable. I'd honed the razor (although badly as one bevel is slightly wider than the other but more elsewhere) and got the hang of stropping so...out came the TM strop, beautiful piece of kit it was .

Was merrily stropping away when I became distracted, by what I can't remember, but as I looked back to the strop I saw what was coming....flipped to early and the blade hit the strop before changing direction.

The frightening part was just how easily the thing sliced through the very thick horsehide, like it was just cutting throught jelly. Sorry Mr Miller...I felt bad all day yesterday...

Luckily the strop is still serviceable until I can get another - thank God for the GPB and it's 2USD exchange rate - but the shave was more or less trashed. The blade was fine and shaved well but I was that nervous when I got to the top lip I reached for the DE!!!

Back to the start for me!

Any advice on removing a 1 inch by 1/4 inch flap from the edge of a strop without too much pain would be welcome!

    Si.

Let me just say "Better on the strop than on the face" I have done both and I recommend screwing the strop before the face.

You might be able to glue it back down with some rubber cement. Use a gummi eraser to remove any excess cement.

You can do the same to the face with crazy glue

Yeah, but it really hurts when you try to rub the glue off with an eraser :-p

The important thing is how deep is the cut. if its shallow a pumice block can sand it out but if its deep you might consider just shortening the strop or not using the affected area if its near the top.

Dont feel bad, last week I was wiping dry one of my razors and talking to my wife at the same time and this particular razor is quite loose. The razor swung up and came down on top of my index finger like it was jet propelled. Now I have a one inch by one quarter inch flap on my finger. Luckily it wasn't deep. Hmmm maybe some pumice.

I've thought more than once that this is why the the term "safety razor" came into being because shaving doesn't seem to be any more dangerous at all with a straight.
