Great shave after a week of camping
Just got back from a week long camping trip in the mountains today. Great shave with my Aust razor, I have a heavy beard and it seems like I get better shaves if I skip a couples of days in between. I used to dread shaving until I started with a straight razor, yesterday I was actually looking forward to getting home and shaving. Anyone else notice a difference in the quality of shaves depending on the amount of beard growth? Camped at over 10,000 feet, got down into the 30's a couple of nights. This time of the year it is beautiful up in the high country.

My first straight razor was a 5/8 Aust round point. Nice razors, those Austs!
I notice my skin is much smoother after a 3+ days of beard shave. I beleive the stubble protects the skin, plus it lets your skin get over the irritation that can come with frequent shaving.
There are a couple of camping threads here at SRP. Here is one I updated last week:

Thanked: 56Honestly, I enjoy shaving with a SR so much, I don't get a chance to see what it's like waiting a few days. But I can say that I don't have any issues shaving daily like I did with cartridges, and to a lesser extent, DEs.

Shaving a multi day growth is one of the places that the straight is head and shoulders above any other shaving system, IMHO.
As long as your prep and edge are on, the razor does not care...
Like many here that does not happen very often...buts it's greatSupport Movember!

Thanked: 580One of the things that really annoyed me about cartridge razors was how easily they clogged. You can't mow down a weeks growth with one, no way, no how. Problem solved over 200 years ago, before it was a problem...

I have no scientific proof to support this observation, but it seems to
me that shaving lather "takes" better on a few days stubble than it
does on a recently shaved beard.
I dunno...maybe it absorbs/penetrates the hair better for some
reason. One thing for sure: thoroughly washing a 3-day growth
before lathering up makes a huge difference in the quality of the
shave.Last edited by PaulKidd; 09-09-2015 at 04:24 PM. Reason: typo

I found that I have to prep more to avoid irritation if I have several days growth, but it does seem to produce a smoother shave! Like you, I used to hate shaving and avoid it, now I find myself shaving on a random Saturday morning just because I want to!!

Ideally I like to shave once a week. Maybe the skin appreciates time to heal?
It helps the new growth comes through really even.
