    Default Doh! Shaving supplies galore!

Sometimes I realize just how dumb I can be. I've spent the last few days scrambling to educate myself and ordering supplies to begin shaving. I'm planning ahead to upgrade with the assumption that I'll really enjoy it, wondering where to get quality vintage supplies.

My wife looked at me this morning and said "What did my grandmother say?" DOH! I never thought to call her. My wife's grandfather (who passed in 2000, just before we started dating) was a small town barber who was skilled with a straight razor. I immediately gave her a shout and learned she has boxes of shaving supplies in the basement that she couldn't bear to throw away, since they were such a part of him. She was ecstatic to learn there was a chance they'd be put back into family circulation. If I haven't cut my throat by the fall, I'll take a trip up north to poke around. What a find for a beginner!

It's all in Vermont, right on the Canadian border. The town of Canaan. I'll be heading up that way early fall. Who knows. Maybe it's all junk. I'd doubt it, though.

When he died, they closed the shop and sold the building. She said they just took everything in the shop and put it into boxes in the basement. She has no idea what is there and had planned on going through it and throwing what she didn't want away. He died 7 years ago and she still hasn't done it. I can't blame her, it must be hard. She said we could come up and take it all if we wanted.

Hopefully I'll be competent enough to give it the care and respect it deserves by then.

Now that's a potential gold mine of good stuff. Even better that it's tied into your family history.

What a great way to preserve the traditions of your past. Shaving with that equipment will be sweet. And how special for your wife's grandmother to have the joy of passing some of her husband's things on to you.

Just a thought...keep checking back to what he left in the boxes as you learn. As your knowlege/skills/interests evolve, you'll probably see new things in his supplies that escape you now amidst the initial information overload.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

I've been wanting to poke around the family for info on any straight razor stuff myself. Thanks for the idea
