How to remove musty smell from old razor boxes
I have several straight razors and matching coffin boxes that I purchased from an antique store. They have a musty smell. I want to keep the boxes because they match the razors and they are in good condition. Any suggestions regarding how to de-stink the coffin boxes?

I just did this and it worked perfectly for a 7-day set that smelled "moldy" really bad. I put them in a drawer with the box open. Next to the box I put a dish of baking soda. I left it for a month and the smell has resolved. It took a month because the smell was very very strong.

that's good to know. i was going to suggest maybe just packing them in baking soda for a while. never tried it but i don't see why that wouldn't work also. JMHO

Before I packed them in baking soda, I would wrap the box in a cut section of "panty hose" , tie at both ends. This would protect the box to a certain extent should moisture get into the container and "stick" the baking soda to the box. There will be some baking soda make it through the hose, but the bad scent will still be pulled through the hose.

I am trying a low tech solution first...I put the open boxes in a laundry mesh bag and hung it out in the sun the the afternoon and if tomorrow is nice I will hang it out again. If that doesn't work...I will break out the panty hose and baking soda. I will keep you posted.

Well, my experiment with the mesh bag on the clothesline didn't work. So I have filled a small dish with baking soda and put that and the boxes in a large zip lock bag. I will leave this on a shelf for a week or so and see if that does any thing. If that doesn't work then these boxes will end up in the trash.

Thanked: 2If you continue want a natural collusion, and the baking soda didn’t work. Spray the box first with vinegar let it dry for day or two, and then put some baking soda direct in to the box. This is an old fashion Greek way to take out bud smells from cloths. And it works perfectly!!!

Keep the bag open! Don't zip it shut. In a week the smell will be gone or darn close.
