Ya but it works if you are dealing with really hot water in the shower! Hydration is what is important in the prep. My whiskers are 'tough as nails' and require a really good prep. The hot water is necessary to hydrate. The towel gets really hot but it cools relatively fast. It creats maximum heat and moisture for a time. It works for me.

Thanked: 3Do any of you guys use the steam towels from classichshaving.com? Out of curiosity, how are they differen than the hand towels that you can get at some place like K-Mart or Walmart or some other retailer? Are they bigger? Made of different material? Honestly, they really just look like any ol' hand towel that you can get anywhere...

That is all very nice but if you shave after you leave a hot shower in my humble opinion there is no need for a hot towel.
I might be wrong but I would guess the hot towel started in the barber shop where the barber wanted to hydrate the customers beard and rather than install a shower abd throw their client in it, they came up with the hot towel treatment.
Make your life easier shave after a hot shower and save the hot towel for those emergency shaves at night.

Thanked: 3I do the hot towel even after my shower. Now, I just have to make do with using my Power Gillette Fusion until my razor returns from Lynn, but so far, I've experienced a closer shave with the hot towel treatment. And I've been thinking, how else would I keep the hair hydrated while I strop? It's not humid at all since we have a fan going and it sucks everything up - I use this as a way to air dry. So even in the bathroom, it's not wet and humid like a typical bathroom.
I have noticed though, most bathroom fans aren't this strong. I have another house on the other side of the country and that house isn't as new as this one (don't actually know how old it is). The one I'm currently staying in is about 10 years old. Now that one, the bathroom does get wet and humid even with the fan, I think.

[quote=Berticus;125820] And I've been thinking, how else would I keep the hair hydrated while I strop?
I do two hot towel routiens: After washing my face in the sink, I apply a pre-shave product(Proraso,or whatever) and massage it well into my beard. I then run the tap water as hot as I can stand it, soak my towel, and apply the towel to my face; I wring it out so the towel is completly soaked, but not dripping, 60 seconds - any longer and the towel cools off. I then re-apply the pre-shave again and leave it on my face as I lather. I then lather my face well massaging with the brush. I then do the hot towel over the lather on my face, massaging with my fingers while the towel is on my beard(I like to do this). - Now I relather and proceed with the shave.
This works very well for me!
Good luck,
Steve

I have tried to use a hot towel and dont get the results I want.. I just have my hot shower, then while I have my brush in hot water in the mug while I strop the sink is full of water to splash on my face while I get ready. Then I can lather up and go!
Works perfectly fine for me.

Thanked: 3[QUOTE=zepplin;125849]Yeah, I already do something like this. What I do is I take my shower, get my beard nice and wet. When I get out of the shower, I lather on some cream and put a hot towel on. I'd then take this time to strop. Since I had already taken a shower, I shouldn't have to keep the towel on as long as the suggested 2-3 minutes. When I'm ready, I wipe off the cream with the towel, splash some water on my face, and then re-apply shaving cream, and then finally shave.
Also, does someone have an answer to my previous question about the classicshaving steam towels? Do people just use hand towels from Walmart or someplace?

I generally shave after my shower. I also apply a wet lather and leave it there while I strop. Then I apply a wet washcloth for about 15-20 seconds over the lather. Then one more hot washcloth followed by more water, proper lather and shave.
If I don't shower first, I take the time to ensure I have hot water on my face for a good 3 minutes (while applying deodorant, etc.) before starting this process.
I've also read that we should wait at least 20 minutes in the morning before shaving to allow the puffiness to go down. Could this be a problem Gawker?
