I replied to a similar post asking the same question on the ATG forum with a link to this thread and post #4 specifically. That was a few days ago and the member there was new and is now banned for being a troll regarding other posts made there. Who knows, could be the same individual?

It is true that Yahoo Groups have started in 2001 but before then there was Yahoo Clubs which morphed into it.

I don't think it matters all that much who started first, second, last. We have many great online communities and many of them have roots in other communities which have preceded them. Some people tend to gravitate around few or one, others are active in many.

I am proud of our history as one of the oldest communities and I am glad that there are many others who provide a home and support for those who may prefer a slightly different flavor than ours. I think we all appreciate and enjoy that we can learn from and help each other, whether on an individual level or as various communities

I like to think of us as stewards of what was created by tens of thousands of people over many many years and it's a privilege to preserve and expand this knowledge. This translation by one of our members of an almost 300 year old text is just a small example of the breadth and the depth that we have here.

Still to me the primary raison d'etre for our community is the people who are part of it at right this moment of time as well as those who we are lucky to reach every day. It's based not only on common interest but more than that on common values - honesty, integrity, generosity, graciousness, and above all love for each other!
